Hi all,

Thank you for the advice regarding BF from my previous postings, I think we
are getting there! Eloise is feeding well, although still has phases where
she won't latch, and I then start her with a nipple shield and after a few
minutes try her again and she then normally is OK. She is feeding well,
normally from both breasts per feed, and my supply is getting better in the
evenings.

I just wondered if anyone has experience of babies wind? Eloise cries a lot
in the evenings and is obviously in pain, I think it is Colic? She then has
bottom wind and will calm for a few minutes, this carries on all evening,
and I get very upset as I hate to see her in pain. The wind smells like
peanut butter? Is this normal for a BF baby?

I don't think it is something I am eating as I have a very bland diet.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Shaz

Hi -

Wind in babies can be caused by several things:

1. Immature digestive system. Try simethicone drops.
2. Inadequate burping. Try even harder. Try other positions. Burping
a baby can be quite difficult.
3. Something in mom's diet, usually cow's milk protein, but not always.

Try each of these in order. For #3, have mom eat anything she likes
(baby's don't actually care about diets being bland) but eliminate ALL
sources of cow's milk protein (and goats and sheep, too). This will
include milk, yogurt, cream, butter and processed foods (ie breads or
cookies) made with those.

Congratulations on your new baby!

Babies are just sometimes gassy and they need to be burped well. Night time
is a prime time for fussiness anyway, so I wouldn't worry that it is
something you are eating. Make sure you burp her well, sometimes I had
better results if I put baby across my forearm and put pressure on their
stomachs, or lay them on their back and bicycle their legs or just putting a
little bit of pressure on their abdomen to bring up the air. If she cries
every night at about the same time for quite a few hours on end, it is
usually considered colic. If not, then just try burping her better and
keeping things calm and quiet in the evenings. I found that mine sometimes
got over stimulated and at night were more fussy. Good luck. :o)
