View Full Version : little weight gain between 8 months and 1 year

Should I be worried about this....

DD has only put on 4 oz in the last FOUR MONTHS!

I've not had her weighed for AGES but we were at the dieticians a couple of
weeks ago and she weighed and measured her.

Her height has gone up from below the 0.3% (we're a SHORT family!) to the
9th and her weight has gone from the 25th to the 9th.

The Dietician said it's nothing to worry about because as long as her height
is growing, that shows she is getting enough nutrition (she is not really a
big eater - just a few spoonfuls a day - she mostly plays with food). She
probably bfs about 6-8 times per 24 hours.

It sounds like so LITTLE weight gain, although she is walking around now and
MUCH more active, and she looks quite chubby still and is hitting all the
milestones (says about 30 words, mostly stuff about dogs, horses and things
in the garden and how much she wants to play with the door and window
handles UP UP PLEASE, SO cute!).

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm going to say no...P stayed at 23 pounds for about 4 or 5 months.
Just about the same time that Ella is. And he's not much heavier than
that, from what I can tell. Slimmer and taller, yes :-). I think
Ella's fine...

some babies are just programmed like that, I'm sure it's nothing to worry
about, it is generally said that babies should triple their birth weight
by a year but my mum tells me that despite doubling my birth weight by 6
months, I didn't triple my birth weight til I was 2 years old, dropping
from the 50th to the 3rd centile so I must have had similarly slow weight
gain. It seems this is the norm in my family to be a small child, then
catch up to about average at puberty, there has been a variety of birth
weights, so some of the drops through the centile charts have been less
dramatic. I wouldn't be concerned, just continue to encourage her to enjoy
her food and let her breastfeed as much as she wants.

Yep it sounds fine. Remember, as long as they are growing on *their* line,
then all should be fine. It looks like she gained in height instead of
weight right now and that is perfectly normal.

Very, very typical for a breastfed baby.

Since I happen to have Gabe's baby book right here (was updating for new
molars):

6 months: 20 lbs, 1 oz
9 months: 21 lbs, 7 oz
12 months: 23 lbs, 2 oz

And this was a child who didn't even start crawling until after 12 months.

Yup. DS did almost exactly the same. I think it was 3 ounces between his 9
month and 12 month checks. The dr. got paranoid and wanted him put on a
high-fat, high-calorie diet, which only sort of happened because he was
still 75% breastfed and didn't like the Pediasure stuff the dr. wanted me to
push. He was 18 months before he got to 20 pounds, and he's still a skinny
kid. But he's perfectly healthy and reaching/passing all his milestones just
fine.

I was really worried for a while, but right about that time, I joined this
group and found out how normal that is for a breastfed kid.

Now DD is 6 months old and has been in the 95th percentile up to this point
(we'll see where she is at her check-up next week, but I have a feeling
she'll be hitting the 20 pound mark easily before her first birthday). So
they come in all sizes, and they all do just fine.

Daniel was about 20 lbs at around 4 months and byt he time he was 1 year
he'd only gained another 3 lbs.... it's pretty common in the second half
of the first year for babies weight gain to slow down.

Coming in late with mine --

Shaina tended to gain in fits and starts from aroud 6 months to several years
of age. At one check-up she would have gained virtually nothing (a couple of
ounces, maybe), then, at the next, she would have gained a few pounds.) Her
gain too was, overall, quite low (she was, and still is, a petite thing), but
as long as her non-existant gains were made up with big ones, the doc didn't
worry. (And she was, generally, healthy as well, which also kept the doc from
worrying.)
