how old is DS?
YOu hvae THREE days of fridge time, not just for the next day.

Try scalding the milk. Not so chock full of goodies, but better than
formula.

I've been pumping every morning for over a month getting ready for my
return to work on November 3. I've started using some of my frozen milk as
I work on getting DS used to taking a bottle every day. Most of my frozen
milk, unfortunately, seems to be bad. I've had a couple that were just
plain spoiled - they smelled like vomit. The rest have a bad smell and a
slightly off taste, but not really a spoiled milk smell. I did some
research and I think it might be the 'soapy' smell that is discussed quite
a bit. Apparently, it's still safe for DS to eat it, but he won't. Also,
my milk goes bad after about 3 days in the fridge instead of the 7 or 8
days that it is supposed to last. I was really feeling good about my
chances at pumping success since I've been able to pump 9 oz. or so every
morning, but this has really got me worried now. What if I have a day
where I can't pump enough for the next day? What am I going to feed him? I
really don't want to ever give him formula!

I'm not sure if I'm really looking for specific answers here. I just
needed to whine a little.

I have this problem. I've not been able to pump and store milk - DD won't
drink it. She is now just over a year old. What I now do it just pump
(working at home) and either chuck it, or heat the milk up to just before
boiling, then make DD a rice pudding or custard in a small dish the oven.
She eat this okay.

I've not found a solution though - although DD goes for up to 8 hours at
daycare without any milk at all - just drinks water and eats a bit. But I'm
lucky in that she only does one full day and half a day a week.

Sorry not much help,
ROSIE

High lipase content - which causes that soapy smell - tends to make milk go
bad more quickly. Lipase basically digests the milkfat, so high amounts of
it push the process of souring along faster than it would normally occur. As
Dawn noted, a scald should mitigate the problem - perhaps you could try it
once and see if your DS will drink the result.

I tried some more of the soapy smelling stuff and it appears that he'll
take it if I give it to him slightly warm. He'll take fresh milk straight
out of the fridge.

I'm going to trying the scalding though just to see if it we'll keep
longer that way. I've also been freezing my milk immediately after I pump
it in hopes that it will keep longer that way. I had been pumping and
leaving it in the fridge for the day before I froze it.

Thanks!

I HAVE heard that cooling slowly and heating slowly can also improve
lipase related problems, tho I just never have had any frozen EBM after
I discovered the problem, so I don't know if it would work.
