View Full Version : Is a Multivitamin Necessary?

I have a 3 month old boy that only eats breastmilk, yet my doctor
suggests that I give him a whole dropper-full of multi-vitamins every
day. I'm not excited about this because it is no joy trying to feed
this icky stuff to the baby every day, not to mention that I take a
multi-vitamin myself...which is passed onto the baby. What are your
thoughts?

Sounds ridiculous to me.

He gets his vitamins from you. My DS--17 mos old--has never had any
vitamins--other than from food or from my milk, nor has his doctor suggested
it---and he is very healthy.

KR was all, like:

It it available by itself? My (12-week-old) son's pediatrician prescribed a
vitamin and floride supplement, which I haven't filled, and I don't know
whether I will or not. He is fair-skinned, but rarely gets sun (*no*
sunlight in our apartment).

D-Vi-Sol by Gerber....hmmmm....ever wonder why a babyfood company would
make a supplement JUST for breastfed infants?

Oh yes, 'twas a rhetorical comment.
Same reason their (gerber) breastpumps are so crappy....

uh - because only breastfed infants require it?? I mean, for some
definition of "require," of course (dark skinned, or not going out in the
sun, or living in the far north, or whatever). But formula-fed infants
don't need it due to supplementation of the formula with vitamin D, so, of
COURSE it's only going to be marketed for BF'd infants. I'm afraid I don't
quite get your point!

BTW, cool product. I don't think a D-only supplement is available in the
States.

No, it isn't. :( I've had to ask friends who travel to Canada to pick
me up some vitamin D-only drops for both DD and DS.

Mom to Julie, 2 yr., 8 mo.
And Jaden, 3 months

Cleaning the house while your children are small is like
shoveling the sidewalk while it's still snowing.

I ordered some from a Canadian store. I'm still not sure whether I want to
give it to my son, but I'm pretty sure I *don't* want to give him flouride.
