View Full Version : OT Developmental Questions

Kathy

I realize that babies develop at their own pace, but I have a few areas
of (minor) concern with my daughter and I was hoping for some input from
others.

DD will be 7 months old in 10 days...

She can not sit up on her own, and when I do sit her up she is quite
wobbly. Sometimes she can stay up for a few seconds if I balance her
just so. When were you're children able to sit on their own?

She can roll from front to back (sometimes she will do it 2-3 times in a
row)...but most of the time she just gets aggrivated and cries. She
can't go from back to front at all. When were your children able to
roll both ways (if ever)?

She makes growling, cooing, coughing and screeching noises among
others...but no repetition of one syllable worlds like mamamamamama or
dadadadadada. When were your children able to do this?

It seems like she has been teething for months, but no teeth showing
yet. When did your children get their first teeth?

Thanks for any input. I usually don't worry about what other's say
their children can do, but DH works with several women with young
grandchildren/neices, etc...and they're always comparing notes. Most of
them are able to sit, have first teeth, etc etc.

Thanks in advance,
Kathy

One of them 5.5 mos - the other 7-something

LATE!

Forgot

One 9 mos - other 4 mos (ouch!)

BTW - both children are quite bright and plays chess. The 11-yo girl in
competetions, the 6 yo boy in a chess club.

Both of them roll both ways, both of them can sit, and both of them have
teeth and can speak - the problem now is to make them stop :-)

Both of them didn't walk a second before 15 mos - one never crawled.

Pillbug is almost 10 months. He still cannot sit up
on his own. Surrounded by pillows, he'll last for
a minute or so before doing the drunken toppling
over. ;) (Pediatrician is not worried.)

Well, Pillbug learned to roll at 4 months. Then,
he decided he did not like being on his stomach,
so he stopped (which worried one of our doctor
friends). Then, suddenly at 8 months, he decided
that he likes rolling after all. Just this week, he
learned to actually get somewhere by rolling.

He's done the repetitive syllables for several
months now. "ba", "ma", "da", "deh", "ga"

> It seems like she has been teething for months, but no teeth showing
> yet. When did your children get their first teeth?

At 8 months. Got 2 teeth, now two months
later, still those same 2 teeth.

Don't worry. As long as they are all at approximately
the same stage by, oh, 18 months or so, I wouldn't
worry. Since we're doing the fully bilingual thing at
home, I don't expect Pillbug to talk until he's 3!

When talking with other moms, my child always seemed behind. Either the
women were exaggerating or they were only emphasizing the positives. No one
wants to brag about how late their child did whatever. The best way for me
to get a look at how DS was doing was to take mommy and me classes. It was
because of those classes that my expectations were grounded in reality. I
could see a whole classroom full of kids DS's age and found that DS blended
in quite well. I figured if I could see a noticeable difference there, I'd
better go see the ped.

Caterpillar sat on her own at 5 months. My mom says I couldn't sit
without propping at 8 months. Both Caterpillar and I walked at 9
months, if that gives you an idea of how much being a good sitter
affects things. ;)

> When were your children able to

4 months, I think, but she never cared about rolling.

> no repetition of one syllable worlds like mamamamamama or

Caterpillar at 10 months still makes only one noise: aaaaaaaaaa. She
will put an "m" sound in now and then, but not in any meaningful way.
She also doesn't growl. :)

> When did your children get their first teeth?

Caterpillar, who I'd swear has been teething since 3 months, is
toothless at 10 months.

T is just over 8 months.

Somewhere between sitting-but-slumping at 5 months and sitting
confidently at 6, we didn't really spot the exact time he stopped
slumping forwards (because he could still sit back up, just wasn't good
at staying up), bad us!

T's never really been interested in rolling. He does it now to get from
sitting to crawling or vice versa, or to get away at nappy changing
time <g> but doesn't seem to do it otherwise. He *can*, he just
doesn't. So I can't honestly give you data beyond "he could roll over
at 4m but not consistently".

T is a drunken Glaswegian, it seems - all his 'words' now sound like
'abuff blith wee oom oom' (if you've heard Rab C Nesbitt that will
cover it nicely). No repetition, just what sounds like carefully
articulated conversation that we simply cannot understand.

One week past seven months (and then two in five days).

Hunter at about 7-8 months. He hardly ever rolled either way so it is hard
to remember.
Luke - 6 months

but no repetition of one syllable worlds like mamamamamama or

Hunter 12 months
Luke 10 months

Both at 4 months but that is early.

She sounds perfectly normal and on target to me! She's just a little peanut
yet :-)

He sat unsupported at almost 8 months. Believe it or not, he couldn't get
himself into a sitting position until almost 11 months. He has no history of
any motor problems. In fact, his motor skills are above average.

About the same time he started sitting unsupported. About 7.5 months.

Don't remember, but that seems pretty normal to me.

Stop comparing notes and tell dh to stop sharing these stories with you.
Your baby sounds perfectly fine.

If you really have concerns then you should talk to your pediatrician, but
your baby sounds pretty normal to me.

7 months is about average, but if she has a big head or hasnt had time
to practice it can be harder to get the strength and balance needed.

Mine can at 5 months and 2 weeks, but she isnt consistent.

9-10 months with the first 2. This one is w/my 2nd husband so I am not sure
how long it will take her teeth to show, though she is currently teething.

Two of mine crawled before they sat. One was pulling up as well -- I am fairly
sure by then he *could* sit, he just never did!

I think the girls both first sat without propping at around eight months and I
never actually *saw* my son sit until, hmmm, maybe ten months, judging by the
pulling-up thing (he took his first steps on his first birthday, presumably he
was pulling up for some time before that). It definitely took the girls some
time before they could sit well on their own.

Don't worry AT ALL about the teeth thing. That isn't something that is related
to any other kind of development. Kids who get teeth late are less likely to
get cavities in their baby teeth, too, which is a plus. (Though my kids all
three had a clean dental checkup today, none has ever had a cavity, and they
teethed right about at an average time, six months or so.)

Exactly. Each mom talks about the one thing their kid did early, so
it's easy to come away with an overall impression of this imaginary
"conglomerate" baby who rolled at 6 weeks, sat up at 2 months, and was
walking, talking in complete sentences, had a full set of teeth, and was
feeding and dressing herself by 9 months old. So, yeah, compared to
that, anyone would start to wonder what's wrong with her baby. lol.

That sounds right on average to me. Jaden is still like that and turned
7 months 3 days ago.

> When were your children able to

Julie didn't roll front to back until almost six months old. Can't
remember back to front. Jaden is rolling both ways. He rolled front to
back just after turning four months; back to front he did for the first
time the day I went to visit my IL's, so, umm, not-quite-six months.

Jaden blew raspberries constantly a couple weeks ago. Now he has just
started saying mamamama very distinctly in the last few days.

Both kids - at 6 months.

If your DH is like mine he reports the earliest any kid did anything as
some kind of "benchmark". Especially if the children are other people's
*grandchildren*, I view the data with suspicion. :) I know I get
somewhat different stories on how accomplished my niece is, from my MIL
vs my SIL (her mom). I think you have nothing to worry about.

DS started sitting unsupported at 6 months minus 1 week. It was a very
sudden development. Two weeks before his 6 month birthday, he was
sitting propped with pillows, sometimes managing a few seconds
unsupported before toppling, etc. Then, a week later he could suddenly
sit up alone quite compentently. So, just because she is wobbling now,
doesn't mean she'll be wobbling next week!

DS can go from back to front very compentently, but almost *never* rolls
from back to front. I've seen him do it only a handful of times. He is
6.5 months old presently. He could roll back to front at about 3.5
months and, as I said, is still very unskilled at front to back.

> She makes growling, cooing, coughing and screeching noises among
> others...but no repetition of one syllable worlds like mamamamamama or

DS *just* this past weekend started babbling "dadadadada" and a few
other sounds like that. Again, very sudden. Last week, he didn't do
anything like that. Then, on Friday, he started doing it. He has made a
lot of developmental changes in a very short amount of time--starting
using a pincher grip, started clasping hands together, sitting, etc. I
hypothesize this has to do with some kind of growth spurt--he was
nursing what felt like a hugely excessive amount for about an entire
month (I'm talking like every 1.5 hours at night! Ouch).

> It seems like she has been teething for months, but no teeth showing
> yet. When did your children get their first teeth?

DS is toothless at 6.5 months. He seems sort of teeth-y and has for the
past 3 months or so, but no teeth in sight.

Babies are incredibly variable and also change very quickly. One of the
babies in my playgroup can't roll from front to back yet and he is 8
months old. OTOH, one of the babies in my LLL group was walking at 8.5
months. I'm inclined to say that your DD is doing just fine, just maybe
on the slightly later side of, "somewhere around 6 months babies
start....." I would trust your instincts though and if your gut starts
to say that something is not right, talk to your pediatrician about it.

My DS shows no ability to push himself up with his arms while lying on
his stomach, which is something that it seems like other babies can do
at this point. I'd like to add that to your developmental poll, since
that is something I've wondered about wrt to DS.

When were your children able to push up on their arms while lying on
their stomachs?

my daughter started cruising at 10 months, i figured we had another month or
so before she stood and then walked
3 days later she was in the middle of the floor and slowly stood up
the next day she stood, then walked

Jaden is doing this now. It's another one of those "sudden development"
things. One day quite recently I just noticed he was pushing himself
all the way up to having his arms straight. L-baby will probably be
doing this any time now. This week, Jaden is getting very frustrated
when he wants to get a toy that's j-u-s-t out of reach in front of him,
and accidentally pushes himself backward with his arms in an effort to
get himself closer to it!

Hmm. I hope I'm remembering correctly but I think Luke was 6 months (he
crawled at 6 months so it was no later then that). Hunter was 8-9 months.
He crawled at 10 months. He worked on it a long time before learning.

Hunter crawled late and was much happier once he learned. Luke crawled
early and he was a happy camper baby the whole first year. He complains
constantly as a toddler though and there appears to be no end in sight :-/

Jeez, I think 8 months for my son, who was a large, laid-back baby. He only
started walking a week ago--at almost 16 months.

My son began to do it at 7 months.

This is highly variable--probably more so than any of the other milestones
you mention. My DS got his first two teeth at 5 months, then another 6 at 8
months. Then molars at 14 months and eyeteeth now at 16 months.

I think your DD is a little on the slow side for sitting, but not alarmingly
so. Sounds as if she's doing just fine over-all.

DS started sitting up (wobbly) at 5 months and was a sitting pro by 5
1/2 months. My niece (7 months this weekend) is still somewhat wobbly
when she sits.

DS didn't roll until the last month or so and still doesn't roll front
to back very often. For him, rolling came well after sitting. My
pediatrician told me that babies with a wide girth (short and chubby)
take longer because it's hard to get all that chub moving. ;)

He just started dadadadadadadada and bababababababa this week. Before
that, he was very vocal but it was all screaming and laughing.

I have 6 children so I'll just give you earliest and latest.

Sitting: 5 1/2 months-8 months

All of them but one were well after 6 months.

4 months-7 1/2 months

My one son went from not sitting up by himself or much of anything to
sitting up, crawling, and pulling to stand on furniture in 4 weeks
(from 7-8months) and walked at 9 1/2.

I never rolled over much at all. I didn't crawl either. I sat like a
little soldier in the middle of the room and then decided to get up
and walk at 10 months.

My current baby is a munchkin at 15 1/2 lbs and almost 7 months. He
rolls both ways, crawls and gets up on his knees next to furniture. He
doesn't eat much in the way of solids, has no teeth, and has no
consonants in his babble.

There are so many variations within normal.
Don't worry.

Thank you everyone for your responses. It helps to hear that there is a
wide range of "normal" and that your children hit the milestones I'm
talking about at all different ages.

I showed this to DH and we agree that we aren't worried about DD...she
is doing fine.

Thanks again,
Kathy

6 months but I know LOTS of kids getting their first teeth at 8 and 9 months
old

Babies do things on their own time. Watch she'll be late starter but once
she gets going, watch out you won't know what hit you and you'll be wishing
she took a little longer!

Sprogly is 7 months today...I don't have much to contribute *except* to say
that I wondered when Sprogly would sit on his own, because he seemed nowhere
near being able to, and then one day two weeks ago he just...did it.

He's working *very* hard at crawling--he's really motivated to get that
cat!--but so far all he can do is scootch backwards a little. He especially
likes to do his rolling-around and back-arching "exercises" during his naked
time, when I put him on the waterproof mat...which is now too small. It's
too cute when he waves his little bare bum up in the air.

I know, I know. Bloke has a co-worker with a daughter almost exactly
Sprogly's age who was sitting unsupported a month and a half ago, and Bloke
was terribly concerned until Sprogly started sitting. Then again, she's 4
inches shorter and 5 lbs lighter than Sprogly, so there. ;o)

It's funny that I just posted this, because last night Lann suddenly
pushed up on his arms while squirming away from getting his pajamas on.
It didn't last long and I think it was accidental, but now I feel like
at least he can do it! Aren't these sudden development things weird? I
swear, the babbling just happened overnight too. No build-up or
semi-babbling--just one day no babbling, one day yes.

Ooh, I forgot to mention that he is also starting to wave bye bye and
hi! I love it. It isn't always reliable though. (I also *swear* that he
sometimes says "hi" while he's waving.)

How cute! I think Julie was about that age when one day DH came home
from work and we both swore we heard her say, "Hi dada!".

It happens when they're older, too. My son never drew ANYTHING until one day we
were at some kids' center in an art museum and he drew a little person, a happy
face with legs. Then he drew, again, NOTHING except scribbles (okay, *one* time
he drew two lines and exclaimed that it looked like a bird, which it did, so I
counted that and put it in a scrapbook) for a year or so. One day in preschool
I came in to hear that all the children had been drawing their houses. Okay,
I'm going to see what a lame house my kid draws compared to everyone else's ...
but he had just looked around and copied everyone else's, and his had a door
with a doorknob, a roof, a chimney with smoke, the whole bit. I was in shock.
The teacher hadn't helped him or anything.
