View Full Version : On Christian arguments for spanking

In considering corporal punishment of children, and in particular in
considering spanking of children, an issue that often comes up is the
religious basis for it. Frequently, certain verses from Proverbs are
used to justify spanking.

But what would Jesus have said about spanking, or any means of
inflicting pain on children? Recent discussions in this group have
touched on this question.

My wife and I think the answer's pretty clear, and we've recently put
our thoughts on the Web, at

http://parentinginjesusfootsteps.org

Please come by and check it out. We also have an online petition
opposing corporal punishment of children, at

http://parentinginjesusfootsteps.org/petition.html

If thou art against spanking and use Jesus thou art twisting Scripture this
is called heresy. I will be praying for thee!

I took a look at the site. It seems a tad thin -- a few ad banners and
some assertions, and that's all. And a few biblical references; the
only from the NT having to do with corporal punishment seems to be that
Hebrews quote, though. Did I miss something? And I didn't see any of
the references to Jesus holding up children as examples or warning
people not to offend them ... did YOU miss something??

Perhaps you should come by our site, and perhaps you should rethink some
things.

On the plus side, I can't fault your interpretation of Jesus on divorce.
His position on that may not always be practical but it's certainly clear.

Thee did miss something from my web site:
This:
"We are against abuse and believe that anyone who harms a child would have
been better never to be born (Mat.18:6)."
Didn't thee see the above?????
Also my study on the New Testament is sent to this newsgroup. I am very
happy we agree on divorce. God Bless!

Yes and if you did not notice, Jesus quoted from the OT often.

No you are mistaken. Jesus used the OT all the time and would not contradict
himself.

These are wonderful websites. Jesus never advocated spanking or
inflicting pain and humiliation on children. I also think the answer's
pretty clear. Proverbs is often used to justify spanking, but
individuals who use Proverbs for justification rarely apply or even
advocate the rest of the OT for application to their personal life.
