Report Blasts Tennessee Foster Care Officials

11-14-03

Nashville, TN- A new state audit criticizes Tennessee foster care officials for
failing to solve problems with children in state care. The report shows more
than one-third of abuse and neglect allegations go unresolved longer than the
law allows.

The audit was released publicly yesterday. Department of Children's Services
Commissioner Mike Miller says the federal court monitor's report are "snapshots
of a department in motion." In his words, "We're not tinkering around the
edges. We're doing a complete reform of the department."

Last week, the federal court monitor in the two-year-old lawsuit settlement
said the state Department of Children's Services is complying with only 18% of
the provisions it is required to meet by February 2005. Auditors also said that
before DCS enters any future settlement agreements, the commissioner should
"seek realistic terms."
