View Full Version : Yet another question - maternity bras and fitting.

Last time, I went to a couple of stores as I hoped to be fitted for a bra.
Both asked what size I was currently wearing, and basically showed me styles
in that same size - no measuring at all. And I didn't find either bra very
comfortable. So this time, as I am getting desparately in need of a
comfortable bra or 2, I am going to a store recommended by a friend. What
should I look for in a bra at this stage, and also in the fitting. Am I
likely to grow much in the next 12 weeks? - I am sure I am bigger this time
than last already. I don't want to spend heaps on something that will only
last a few weeks. Wow, pregnancy brain really seems to have set in early
this time, if I can't even work out how to buy a bra!

Thanks,
Cathy

Cathy,
My experience is that you have to ask if they have someone available to do a
fitting. Otherwise they assume you are happy with your current bras and
sizes.

I didn't have a fitting, but they said to buy up a size from my normal size.
That's what I ended up doing, and it's worked out so far (I'm 14 wks), but I
doubt it will get me through to the end. I did make sure to get a size
where I didn't have to use the outside hooks yet, so there's a little room
to grow.

I read somewhere that the best time to be fitted for a bra was around 8
months (for a nursing bra), and allow a little room in the cup for when
your milk comes in.

For a bra to wear now, you really have to be fitted. Or a bra to wear at
any stage! Plus, different brands fit quite differently. I'm one size
in a Triumph, and another in an Elle McPherson (which isn't that
supportive right now, but it looks nice and comes in black!)

I can't remember what part of the country you're in, but Kirks in
Wellington are excellent at this sort of thing. The bras I got at 37
weeks I'm still wearing 4 months pp.

Good luck!

Of all places, I had good luck at GapBody. The girl who measured me (and
was very helpful in picking different styles) was a bit taken aback by my "I
am a 34long" comment. Well, chicky, nurse 3 babies and that's what you are
;) Anyway, I like comfy, stretchy, better a bit big than too tight. Maybe
buy one a tad big and try it out for awhile before you buy several.

Cathy,
While I am pregnant I have gotten bra extenders. they seam to help with the
pinching. Yes my cup size does go up but with the extender it helps. I am
normally a G/H (depending on the type of bra) and have to order my bra's off
the internet so they are so expensive. Since where I live you cant get
bra's bigger then a DDD. Then when it comes to nursing bras I do a big
search on the net and buy a couple they are expensive but you got to do what
you got to do.

Hope this helps. You can get extenders in maternity stores and I think you
can even get them in sewing stores...I was told this once but never checked
it out.

Good luck

I know, but I need something now!

That coudl be the problem - I assumed I was the same size in each brand.

No dammit, I wish we had something like Kirks here. I'm in Tauranga. I'll
try and offload the small child and go in - that will make it heaps easier,
and I'll be less likely to take something just because DD is gettting
restless.

Thanks,

I'll do that. I have a free morning tomorrow, so will try and offload DD
with Nana, and go and ASK to be measured (at a couple of stores, just for
fun).

Thats what got me through last pregnancy, but this time I was still wearing
my ill-fitting maternity bras from last time (DD was still nursing), so I
really have no idea what size I am. Bigger than last time, I know that!!

I like that!! I feel that way, and I've only nursed one baby (so far). I
hate lace and seams, so limits me as I find them really itchy. We'll see
what happens tomorrow.

I managed to find a bra extender last time (had to go in and ask - they were
hidden away). This time, it seems to be the cup size I'm having probs with.
I'll ask to be measured, and if I'm not happy, I just won't buy. At least
I'm a standard size, so should be able to find them in stores (at least I
think I am!).
