I'm a high school teacher in Washington state. When my wife was
pregnant with our now-5-year-old child, I wrote this little research
paper on maternal mortality prior to the 20th century. It's pretty
spooky if you're currently pregnant, but it might make you feel
comforted to know that we in the developed world have left these
dangers behind us for the most part.

It includes material on folk remedies, misogynistic religious
attitudes, the development of antiseptics and pain relief. Please
support my work by clicking on a couple of the Google ads before
leaving the site. I hope you find it interesting!
