Hi Guys

Don't know if you can help on this one, but here goes....

Have any of you experienced wrist/fingerjoint pain gradually coming on
after the birth of your baby?

I gave birth nearly 2 weeks ago and in the last few days the pain has
gotten alot worse. At times I can barely pickup my new baby, which is
really starting to upset me.

The pain is like a very bad cramp and nothing seems to ease it. I've
tried massaging the joints and excercising the joints.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

I have not had this experience myself but the only suggestion I might
have is allergiess. My aunt developed a milk allergy during her first
pregnancy. This is not a milk intolerance but and allergy that gives
her severe joint pain (I do believe fingers and wrists) if she has any
kind of milk product at all. It was not something she had before but
still has after 9 years.

Just a suggestion.

Well, I'm still ttc, so I can't comment on how birth might have affected
things, but have you considered tendonitis/carpal tunnel/repetitive injury?
I have carpal tunnel (mild) and my hands and wrists hurt when I use them too
much, similar symptoms to yours. When I babysit my niece for the weekend, I
can barely move my hands and wrists by the end. There's a lot of lifting,
diapering, etc with a baby which could definitely qualify as a repetitive
injury!
Check it out with your doc and try ibuprofen/Aleve/ whatever pain reliever
you are allowed. You can also try those wrist/hand braces they sell for
carpal tunnel for extra support. I like the ones that are like lycra gloves
with a wrist support so my fingers get support too. I found that I can't
lift her the "normal" way by spreading my hands and putting them under her
armpits because the spreading of my hands put toomuch stress on them. You
might experiment with different ways of lifting that don't cause as much
pain.
Good luck,
Amy

Like Amy said, maybe carpal tunnel or RSI. Do you by chance have
arthritis? It can go into remission when you are pg and flare up quite
badly after. Maybe you had it there (is it both hands or just one?) but
never noticed it until you were post-partum as well as using those
joints alot more with your new baby.

I hope you feel better soon. I have arthritis and have found rubbing in
some Tiger Balm-type stuff can provide temporary relief.

Yes. I had shoulder pain (rotator cuff bursitis) after my first - due to
the way I held my arm while nursing him. After my second, I had carpal
tunnel symptoms for a while, also from the way I held her during nursing.
THis time, I have numbness and tingling along the ulnar nerve distribution
- again, due to nursing! (I attribute it to nursing because each time, the
symptoms would be worse during nursing, and would ease when I used
different positions than that to which I was accustomed).
