I can't figure out a way to directly link you there, but go to cnn.com
and check out the video of the 14 pound baby. Owie owie owie!!! The
mother delivered THREE WEEKS EARLY! She was measuring 47
centimeters... Wow!

It makes me want to diet until after the baby's born... I keep
chanting to myself, "At the 20 week ultrasound, we were in the 51st
percentile... We're measuring normally. The baby will not be
gigantic..." over and over.

I can't see the video cause of a slow connection. Wow, 14 pounds is
bigger than my 7 week old is. She is just 11 pounds now.

Baby looks like a little Sumo wrestler! Here's an article and a
picture:

http://www.local6.com/news/4659349/detail.html

Technically, she was *almost* 14 pounds - 4 ounces short. But at that
point, honestly, does 4 ounces matter? Probably not.

Haha as far as I'm concerned, 4oz makes little difference... That's kind of
a scary baby... I don't mean to sound mean, but she's almost downright
homely. I think someone must have miscalculated dates! lol

Ouch? A certain MKPer gave birth to a 13lb 5oz baby by VBA3C, if I remember
rightly :-) That baby was caesar.

You remember correctly. :-) William was not fat like that, though. He
was 1.5 inches longer, so perhaps that makes the difference.

I met a baby yesterday who weighed 9-12 at birth, but his head was
17.75 inches!! William's was only 16. The size of the head is way
more important than the weight, IMO. Lorelei's head was 14 inches, and
even though she weighed 11 lbs., that was nothing compared to William's
head.

My goodness! Colin was only 9 lbs 6 oz, but his head
was almost as big as William's. Genevieve had the smallest
head at 14" and 8 lbs 2 oz, and Adrian came in at 14.5" and
7 lbs 2 oz. I agree that the head circ is the main issue,
though Colin's chest circ. was actually a bit bigger than
his head circ, so getting his shoulders out was an effort
as well (though not too bad--the whole 2nd stage was less
than 20 minutes).

I can't imagine that fat is really all that difficult to birth though. It's
hair that I remember hurting - like squeezing out a coconut!

That makes sense. Ana's head circumference was 37cm, not sure what that
translates to in inches, pretty average I think. No moulding, so she came
out pretty easily.

Sorry to reply to my own post, but I just found a site to convert the
measurement. Ana's head was a modest 14.5 inches, which explains her easy
birth. Still, not bad for a 7lb 9oz 37-38 weeker!

I don't remember the measurements of my babies head sizes, but they
have always told me my babies had 90th and 95th percentile heads
despite being only 6.5 to nearly 8 pounds. Since all 3 of my babies
were the same big heads with small to average bodies, I don't know the
difference with any other way, but even if more weight is not harder to
birth, I bet it is alot harder to carry.

With the big heads and smaller bodies, all my babies have shot out like
rockets. Once the head clears, they're born. I imagine that would be
different with a large baby.

No, she's not scary, just a chubb. When she thins out, and gets some
muscle to go along with that fat, I bet she'll be cute as a bug in a
rug.

Oh definitely! In no time, I would be willing to bet she would look more
like a baby and less like a Cabbage Patch Kid.
Friend's nephew was like that... Big fat baby and now that he's a bit older
and is now at the age where he's crawling around and moving, he's gotten
longer and less chubby, and even the elastic band joints are gone and he's
sooo cute.

Mmm. There was a 12-lb baby born the same day as ds1 (we had the same
doula), and I met the mom and baby when our boys were ~7 weeks old.
This baby was crazy fat, with squinty eyes and a pouting mouth due to
the facial pudge. My boy was still a beanpole, and I'm sure the mom
thought he looked downright sickly! I'm also sure by the time the kid
was a year, that pudge was gone and he looked adorable as all of them
do!

This reminds me of one of my favorite juxtapositions of parental
opinion on their babies' appearances:

"My boys were nice and big and strong, already holding their heads up -
not like those floppy little babies." (MIL, talking about her 9.5 lb
babies)

"She was such a sweet, delicate little thing, not like those torpid
slugs." (best friend's dad, talking about best friend, who was born at
30 weeks and weighed 3 lbs - but was still 21" long)

babies!)

That is so true. I know I think the tiny little babies are cute in a
delicate newborn way that all babies are cute but they just don't seem right
to me. I'm used to bigger babies (mine were not huge but over 8lbs). I'm
programmed to think that is *just perfect*.

Now hair - I think babies with tons of black hair are just fascinating to
look at. Mine were nearly bald and what they did have was so blonde you
couldn't see it. Babies with all that hair look like 6lb 2 year olds or
something :-) Extremely cute.

Holy Moly. My kids' heads were only 14". I didn't think I'd ever get
Hunter born. If his head would have been that big it would have never
happened!

Yeah, I'm programmed for decent sized, bald, huge headed
babies. Babies with normal sized heads look odd to me ;-) A friend
had a baby who literally had Don King hair at birth. It was
*weird*! She was a cute little thing, but I could never get over
the tiny head with the *huge* shock of hair ;-)

Our Samantha was born with a full head of brown hair. We're at 3 months
now and she's still not lost much if any of it. I'm not sure when/if
she'll be apt to lose it (and when do baby's eyes change color if
they're going to?), but I didn't realize it until my husband spoke it a
few weeks ago, but it's often difficult to think of Sam as a
*baby*...she does look like a miniature 2 year old! I also didn't
realize that lots and lots of hair was particularly unusual, but it
appears to be so...even strangers in stores stop and comment "Look at
ALL that HAIR!"=) It is cute (and I am the proud mama=)!

Vanessa,
She DOES have a lot of hair, and she's adorable! Lucky you with all that
hair -- by the time she is 1 or 2, you might actually be able to do
something with it -- if Samantha allows it of course. Taylor is 2.5 and
JUST now having enough hair to pull back into pigtails, BUT she'll never
allow me to do it. She has a much too sensitive head for anything. Even
barrettes. If she "deigns" to let me put in a clip, within 2 minutes she's
"all done" and wants them out. : ( I'm not a super frilly girly girl,
but I always loved to play hairdresser as a child, and had long hair that I
was always braiding or putting in pony tails, etc. My only hope is that
Addie won't be such a stickler...

DS#1 was born with such blonde hair - and blue eyes - that it looked like he
had none at all. He did have a fair amount of (light) hair, but by no means
lots of hair. He still has very blue eyes and very blonde hair - and it's
thick now. DS#2 was born with TONS of black, black hair, and his eyes were
so dark brown that they almost looked black. He didn't really lose any
hair, but after about a year or so, his hair had started to lighten up.
It's now gone from black to a dark brown, and he still has those dark,
almost black, eyes. Boys look like complete opposites!

I wish I'd had you to help me, Stephanie--I tore in four places IIRC

pushed too hard in my desperation to achieve vaginal birth.

Thank you=) What's funny I'm not a "frilly girly girl" either, but I've
sure enjoyed playing with Samantha's hair and putting barrettes in it=)
No, the barrettes don't really serve a purpose yet but I, the grownup
girl whose mother couldn't make to be frilly, think they're terribly
cute on Sam. I'm hoping that these dresses and hairdos I'm enjoying
don't influence her to be a real "frilly girly girl", however...I'm
hoping she'll love horses and dirt as well as "girly girl" things;)

My hair was also almost black at birth. For some odd reason my hair
lightened to almost blonde when I was a toddler. By the time I went to
kindergarten my hair changed to dark brown.

Although I know blue eyes are due to a recessive gene and my own brown
eyes will probably rule out Samantha keeping her daddy's blue eyes, blue
eyes and brown hair are quite attractive together...I'm keeping my
fingers crossed!=)

If it's any consolation, Genevieve seems to be *very*
into girly girl hair and clothing, but is 100 percent tomboy in
her take-no-prisoners approach to life ;-) I figure she'll
just take over the world in high heels. It's very funny how
people react to her. They see her looking all girly and
expect her to be a sweet little thing, and then they see her
in action...

Jamie,

I don't get to do much girl hairdos either with my girls. Caitlin had
quite a bit of hair early, and I did get to do it for awhile, but then
she would not allow it as she says any little thing I do hurts. We
have cut her hair into a bob with layers now, so it is manageable since
she hardly allows brushing. And, Bess at 25 months still doesn't have
enough hair for anything, not even a cut. If not dressed in girly
clothes, people always assume she is a boy. Ava looks like she will
have copious amounts of curly hair, so perhaps she will be the one who
lets me play with her hair.
