Hi,

Bit of an unusual header to say the least.

I and my pregant Missus really enjoy watching the X-Files, the audio output
of our "entertainment" system is quite powerful, therefore we are subjected
to lots of rumbling low frequency sound effects as we encounter alien space
ships with Mulder and Scully.

We note that our 31 weeks old girl, still inside Mummy's uterus moves quite
significantly whilst we are watching the X-Files.

I do admit the volume is set to quite LOUD.

Do we need to be mindful of our unborn daughter in relation to watching the
X-Files?

Thanks in advance for information.

Are you worried you are affecting her hearing or making her a little
paranoid about extra-terrestrials? ;-)

Abit of both Cuddlefish.

I don't want to be scaring or causing any adverse health problem for unborn
daughter with the loud low freqency sounds, should I be mindful of exposing
our unborn baby to such loud noises.

Kind of! I first thought this was more spam until I actually read it... I
used to be an X-Files fan until the new actors/actresses all came around :(

I can relate... DH is a techno/any music with real loud bass freak, I
guess... I also have a fair amount of sound stuff in my car, since my car
has turned into his music 'toy' - I drive, he does not. He's put in all
kinds of amps, subs and even tweeters and horns? He loves the music LOUD
and nearly shaking the entire house or car - but it's way worse in the
house!
I enjoy loud music as well, and I drag him out to concerts and stuff (Last
Wednesday I went to see A Flock of Seagulls, then on Friday night we hooked
up with my dad to see Bo Diddley) A couple months ago, we went to see some
other live bands at the casino with my parents, and well, music - often too
loud - runs in the family!

Yup, I know what you're talking about. In utero, lots of sound passes
through and the baby can and often should react to loud noises. I noticed
that, anyways. When the Elvis impersonator came on at the casino, I had to
leave the stage area because the movement was just too much for me to handle
and sit comfortably with. I now have a cat that just made its bed on my
stomach, and even that is making some major protest movements! Light is
another thing I notice a reaction to.

> I do admit the volume is set to quite LOUD.

I'll admit in my case, this is the case as well. "Quite LOUD" might even be
an understatement :(

I don't think so... If it doesn't bother the mother, and if it's not all the
time, I don't see how it could be too much of a concern. I don't head out
to loud and noisy concerts often... Aside from the 2 last week, it was
probably around 2 months since the last time. I'm able to control the
volume in the car, and if it bothers me, it goes down, no questions asked -
same goes for the TV if I find it bothers me. The loud music DH plays in
the house isn't a daily thing either... Usually once a week or so, sometimes
once every 2 weeks, just whenever he gets the chance, and it, as well, goes
down if I ask for it to go down, again, no questions asked.

Just my 2¢. I don't think you'll have a deaf or hard of hearing newborn in
a little bit, and some sound is filtered through a stomach and all the stuff
the baby lives in. Often, I find, mine can react to something like sitting
in the car (my car is loud and shakes a lot because it's a little diesel
engine!) or if I'm in traffic waiting for a train at the front of the line.
I, personally, don't think it should be too much of a concern, baby wise, if
SHE can handle it, I'm sure the unborn baby can as well in doses. Just my
opinion, some will probably disagree, though!

You ask a good question!

From what I have determined, babies can get startled from loud noises which
do travel through the womb relatively unchanged. Babies do tend to prefer
soothing classical music and lullabies and gentle tones. I personally have
worked in a school undergoing a seismic upgrade for much of my pregnancy and
I am worried that my child will need the sound of a jackhammer to be lulled
to sleep once born. ;-)

I don't think you have anything to worry about. I have had three pregnancies
and three healthy children. I went to a few loud music concerts while
pregnant. My oldest did get startled when the bread cabniet slammed down
though, it was hysterical, but she is fine.

By this point in development, the baby *can* hear. The
baby also experiences the mother's emotions in a pretty visceral
way, as mom's neurotransmitters cross the placenta. So, if
the show gets mom's adrenaline going and she's really feeling
that dramatic tension, then the baby is certainly in a position
to start drawing some cause/effect relationships between
feeling stressed and hearing those sounds. On the other hand,
if mom is feeling happy and carefree and relaxed while enjoying
the show, the baby will be making those associations instead.
I don't think there's any issue with the sounds being
loud enough to cause physical damage.

Best wishes,
Ericka

I'd be more concerned about your wife because of all the awful
pregnancy/birth/scary images on the show!

I was pregnant the same time Scully was (although not nearly as long,
thank God!) and I found the show disturbing at times.

However, I don't think it hurt William in any way!

Mine likes Green Day. I'm concerned that she might be born with a
mohawk. :)

And this baby is a Franz Ferdinand fan.... [She especially loves it when I
sing with the music!]
