View Full Version : couple of general questions

Hi, quick intro, I'm 14 1/2 weeks pregnant with our first. I just have a
couple of general questions (don't worry I'm sure there will be more to
come!!)
I'm taking Folic Acid tablets - in some books I've read it says to take them
for the first 3 months, in others it says to take them for the whole time.
On the jar it says to take them for the whole time (but who really trusts
what the jar says? Of course they'll want me to buy more!!) - I know it's
helpful for forming bones etc, helps prevent against spina bifida, so does
it continue to help into the second and third trimester??

Second question (bit embarassing) - is it ok to use lube when my husband and
I make love?? I mean I know that the baby is in it's own protective area,
but I would hate to think that I'm putting chemicals up there that might get
through and hurt it somehow. Using water based, I gather that is best, but
I really don't know (and feel pretty stupid for asking)

Thanks

Hi Linda

Docs here where I am recommend you take folic for at least the first 12
weeks of pregnancy but you can also take vitamins like pregnacare for the
whole of pregancy and after pregnancy whilst breastfeeding as well. I think
it generally just depends on the mothers views and the way she feels but you
should take them for at least 12 weeks.

Im not sure about 2nd question but im sure its ok but please dont quote me
on this. Im sure someone else can answer this question though.

Welcome Linda and congrats!

I stopped at 3 months, but always make sure I eat plently of foods with
folic acid in (breakfast cereal is my fave!).

It's a personal choice.

I get sore and dry, and use it sometimes... (have gone of sex for now)
always used a water based lubricant, it better than being rubbed raw and
then developing an infection!

I took prenatal vitamins the whole time. Not sure about just folic acid
tablets.
