View Full Version : colostrum discovery

About a week or two ago I posted asking about colostrum and what it looked
like/when it came in. I was very curious and somewhat anxious because I've
had a breast reduction, and I wasn't sure I'd be able to produce milk.
Well, tonight, after a gruelling day of painful contractions and a near
accident in the car this evening, I was absolutely elated to see liquid
proof that my parts are working the way they should. Not only am I
releasing colostrum, but it is coming from a number of places on both
nipples, so I have a lot of confidence that I'll be okay with breast
feeding. After so many disappointments this pregnancy, this is a real
treat. Just thought I'd share my happiness. : )

And don't forget misc.kids.breastfeeding. I believe there are a few
BFAR moms there.

Well, that is a bright spot for you at least! Sounds like you'll be all set
for the baby :-)

OK - a question for the *other side* - is it normal NOT to produce any
colostrum before the childbirth?
I haven't had any breast surgeries, my nipples are normal, etc.
Plenty of women told me they *leaked* colostrum when they were in the 7th
month of the pregnancy. Well, I am almost week 32, and so far no colostrum
yet - is that normal?

I wouldn't worry about it. I have two children, and never leaked any
colostrum with either pregnancy.

I never saw any while pregnant with Julie, and haven't yet with this one
either. Had (more than) enough milk and nursed Julie for 14 months.
Don't worry. ;-)

As many have said I'm sure, totally normal. I didn't leak a drop while
pregnant with ds. Milk production was fine, too.
