DD is going to have the first shot, I just wonder should I give her the
acetaminophen before or after the shot? If before, how long before?

Thanks

We waited until after. When the fever got bad. But we were also told not to
judge her discomfort by just fever. To also use fussiness and irritability
as a judge. If she could not be comforted any other way, we were to give her
a small dose.

I am anti meds, but opted for her comfort instead of my fears. When Kris (my
niece) was a baby, my mother kept her drugged (from birth until about 1 year
old) on children's tylenol so she would sleep better and not "be a bother"
(she had progressed to children's tylenol, when I was a baby, it was boone's
farm "strawberry hill" in my bottles lol great mom huh? lol!).. So needless
to say, I was not eager to start Alegra on ANY kind of meds! :-D

Your best bet would be to call and ask the dr's office what they suggest
before you go in for the shots.

We gave it to my DD only after the shot when we got home. We were
told by the doctor that it wasn't necessary, but that it was okay to
do if it made *us* (the parents) feel better. In fact, it was only
required if DD began running a fever.

I usually give it shortly before we leave the house,
which results in it being given a half hour to an hour before
the shot.

Best wishes,

It depends on what you consider "absolutely necessary."
Giving it to them before the shot does cut down on the aches
and pains afterwards. I'm happy to give it to them to reduce
the pain. I think it makes it easier on them.

If you breastfeed, I would recommend nursing immediately after. It
relaxes them and you. I gave tylenol after we got home, which was
about an hour later. I ended up feeling bad because he was TOTALLY
zonked from it. Or maybe it was the shots, I don't know. It just
freaked me out to see him so sleepy.

I also give some paracetamol about 30mins before the shots. In my opinion it
gives it a chance to get working before the pain of the shot and possible
fever set in. We have only three sets of shots here in NZ and I think that
even if the Paracetamol doesn't help it's only three unnessasary does in 15
months, can't do any harm (unless you over dose of course). Also it makes me
feel I can do something to help the little man!

This whole thread is causing me to decide to wait until the baby can talk
before any vaccinations.
