View Full Version : Anyone have to re-do their first u/s???

Hi everyone!
I went in last week for my first u/s. Since I am not having an amnio or AFP
test - and I'm 37, they always give me a level II ultrasound.

The doctor wants me back at 22 weeks to better see the 4 chambers of the
heart -- and also to check marginal previa (to see if it moved up).
We did see all four chambers -- but I guess they want a better look.

Anyone else have to go back for a re-check about five weeks later and
everything turned out fine?

Thanks in advance!

Claudia

We went back after 4 weeks for a second look at the heart. The heart
was fine, though as I have written elsewhere, we did find at the 24 week
ultrasound that baby only has a single umbellical artery.

My words are actually meant as reassurance. The second "mid-pregnancy"
ultrasound revealed something we hadn't know before, but as it turns
out, everything looks good even with that unsettling little blip. I,
myself, am very glad we did it.

Unless you turn out to be one of the incredibly small number of folks
whose pregnancies do have problems, the second ultrasound 'just in case'
will be just another chance to get splodgy pictures! (And in our case,
it was our chance to learn the sex, since baby didn't cooperate any
better on that picture than she did on the heart pictures at the 20 week
ultrasound)

With my first baby, the head was lemon shaped in the first ultrasound.
I went back a week later, and the head was fine. It was simply the
way she was laying that made the head look funny.

Hi Claudia!

Not to worry! The same exact thing happened to me--I'm 37, had my
first ultrasound a bit early, and Spud was squirming around so much
that the tech didn't feel comfortable with the shots of the four
chambers of the heart. She was SO patient and even called the ob/gyn
in to look at it on the screen to get a confirmation from her, but
even the ob/gyn couldn't see it clearly enough to give her blessing.
(Everything else was fine--right on schedule for growth and all.)

So back I went a couple of weeks later, and sure enough, our squirmy
worm was at it again, even pushing his hands up toward the wand in a
"No pictures!" pose when he got sick of being poked and prodded. But
the tech persisted, and finally got a clear shot of the four chambers
(and got lots of pictures to print for grandma and great auntie, who
came along for the photo shoot, in the meantime).

Bottom line: Everything was fine. They just don't want to take ANY
chances. And I'm sure your recheck will be fine too!

I went in for a level 2 ultrasound and my doc wanted me to see a heart
specialist. I am EXTREMELY high risk (a diabetic having multiples), and my
doctor said that he thought everything looked good, but wanted a second
opinion. The specialist said everything looked great too. Don't worry too
much about it. The babies hearts are too small for them to see really
great. As long as they see the 4 chambers, the 2 main artery branches, and
the hearts look like they are beating where they should be there isn't
anything to really worry about. For me, the specialist said that IF there
was anything, it would be a hole in the heart, but the hole is too small at
this point to see, they usually close on their own, and if not, you can't do
anything about it until after they are born anyway.

When my sis was pregnant. They doctor we were originally using messed up
royally on the due date (we even knew the exact day of conception but he
disregarded that) by 6 weeks. He said that we were 20 weeks when in fact we
were only 14. So, for 6 weeks we were stressed because the baby was
(according to a 20 week blood test) "showing signs of severe autism".. and
he suggested we discuss aborting. (NEVER am option!). Thankfully, the true
20 week US (done at 19 weeks 2 days) showed everything was perfect.

Talk about a long 6 weeks! But it taught me just how wrong doctors can be...
So don't stress about it too much :-)
