When the babies come, I try to go and stay with the family for the
first few days to a week and keep baby with me at night so mom and dad
can get some rest. When baby wakes I take him or her to Mom to nurse,
and then take baby back to settle down, telling Mom, if you hear baby
cry, it's my problem, not yours. Usually baby sleeps on my chest on a
comfortable chair or sofa and we both sleep well, but if baby is fussy
and needs to be walked, rocked, sung to, etc., it's OK if Grandma
doesn't sleep. Even co-sleeping moms (like my daughter Barbara
(Circe)) can use this respite on occasion when baby just won't settle
down.

And in later weeks when Mom and Dad hit that brick wall, I sometimes
go back for a few nights. It works wonders.

If you have a mother, sister, or friend whom you trust to fill that
role for you, do take advantage of it, and don't be shy about asking
for help.
