View Full Version : 31 weeks and another milestone

31 weeks. Only 6.5 more weeks at work - my cover has been appointed and we
have a start-date for her, so I can do a good handover and ease in to the
job. The boss has started talking about the group I work for going out for
an early dinner as a goodbye (I think he thinks I won't be back!). One of
the lecturers keeps telling me I'm looking HUGE, while one of the
researchers is amazed at how neat and small the bump is...
And the other night, as I curled around Bloke's back to drift off sleep, Bug
had a big squirmy session and Bloke jumped and said, "ooo, I felt that!",
which was nice.

My little spawn is squirming like mad, right now I can barely type because
there seems to be a femur stretched from my navel to ribs and I have to lean
back to type. Plus, u can SEE the squirming, it looks like I've got a wild
animal stashed under my shirt.

I get a lot of that - both of those, I mean! It's weird how nobody
thinks your bump is the appropriate size. It's always either "gosh,
you're HUGE", or "you're so tiny!!" What's up with that?

I just trained my fill-in at work this afternoon. Felt weird! She is slated
to cover the majority of my duties until December (she is an intern). I'm
planning to work up until the week before my due date and so we have two
weeks overlap in case she has questions for me (it will be hard for me to
sit back and let her take over, while only coming forward if neccesary!).
I still haven't gotten a "you're HUGE" comment. From people who know me
fairly well I have had, "you're starting to really look pregnant" or "you
look pregnant!" From more casual people I get, "where are you hiding that
baby" types of comment.

Aw! So fun. My baby is about the squirmiest little fellow I've ever
known--visible lumps and bumps and jumps all over!
Congrats on being in the single digit "countdown" now!

I could handle the latter comments. I do look pregnant.
However, I got 2 comments recently that didn't sit well with me:
1) A friend of my DH's didn't know I was pregnant, and he said to me,
"You are getting a little fat there, aren't you?" I responded, "I'm
pregnant, you idiot!"
2) A woman asked me when I was due. I told her, and she said she was
expecting 2 months after me. Then she said, "You are really looking
big there." I was shocked, "I am?" "Yeah, you are." I questioned
her further. She was comparing me to her. She is only 10 weeks
pregnant. I am 20 weeks. It would be like comparing me to someone
who is about to give birth. SHEESH!!!

Yes! Bloke is convinced, having watched the Bug boogie, that Alan Dean
Foster (who wrote Alien) must have seen a baby moving in a woman's
belly and had "issues"!
I find that if I lean forward for something when I'm sitting down, the
Bug does a lot of stretching to make a bit more room. This makes
reading the paper sitting on the floor more difficult than ever.

That's really cool!

I'm not doing that one. I daren't - I have too many friends who've
gone to 42 weeks to assume I might actually have this baby in anything
less than 10 or 11!

I tend to do everything on the floor or bed, with legs open in a v shape.
VERY hard now because the little beastie wants to prevent me from bending.
So I have to kind of hump my back and stretch over my legs to:
read newspaper
cut stuff Im sewing
paint toenails
fold clothes
*sigh*
I ALWAYS think of that alien when the baby moves a lot. I told the
stepmonkeys that the baby would come bursting out thru my navel. They just
looked at me. Obviously, unlike me, they didnt see Alien when they were 8.

It's odd, I'm 37.5 weeks, and my belly is *enormous*, all out in front, and
my pelvis is very painful, and yet I seem to be able to cut my toenails and
put lotion on my feet without too much trouble.
Then again, pedicures are nice.

My baby is diagonal and seems to stick hard unbendable parts in the places I
need to bend.

Congratulations on yet another milestone :-) Isn't it fun to do the
countdown in single digits now?

I start my maternity leave next Monday (September 8th) but I don't think it
will be much different from what it is right now until I give birth, because
I'm sure I will still have to deal with a lot of e-mails (I can work from
home). One part of the job is definitively over, but the other part will
never be ready. They decided not to get any replacement, so this is why I
suspect dealing with e-mails :-)
I decided to stay on the maternity leave for 5 to 6 months, and hopefully DH
will be able to take over on his paternity leave until the baby turns 1.
<One of
> the lecturers keeps telling me I'm looking HUGE, while one of the

Yes, people are very *quick* in telling you "you're huge/small". There is
just about one person - my mother's boss - who said I look just right for my
stage. I know (I've been taking a lot of pictures lately) that I don't look
huge when you look straight at me, but if you look from the side, the bump
*is* rather impressive :-)
From the back, you can't even tell I'm pregnant, I still have the waistline
and my bum hasn't *protruded* (yet!) ;-)
What's really weird is that since the baby changed positions, and the bump
got more *pointy*, the clothes fit me much better. I've bought a dress (not
maternity, just XL size) that fits me quite well, and it will be easy to
transform it into my usual M-L size next summer (assuming I get back to that
size! Ouch!). So far I only have 2 maternity shorts, and 2 maternity dresses
(if you count this dress, too), and some underwear and bras. Oh yes, I
should count in 2 pre-pregnancy skirts which I changed to being *pregnancy*
skirts by chaging the waistband to go over my bump now.

Yes, that *is* nice. DH practically spent this one-month holiday holding his
hands on my bump or watching it. The squirming is so visible now that it is
very funny!
Be well,
Elly

Why do people do this? I mean, every pregnancy is different.
Everyone carries their babies differently. I don't get it.
I never, ever tell a woman she looks big or small. I do ask how far
along they are, though.

For me, since people have been saying, Oh, any day now, huh? since I was 6
months, it's a relief to be able to just say, yeah.
