Thanks, Karen--I wasn't pregnant in '99, had Honour in '98, but I was
certainly around at that point. I'm glad to see you again and hope #6 comes
fast and slick as a whistle :-). Thanks for the sticky vibes--here's hoping

Wow, welcome back, Joanna!

I've wondered many time how you were doing, and I was this >< close to
emailing you a couple of times - but I was thinking that you might need
some time away from your online world.

I'm so, so glad to read that you're pregnant! You've helped me a lot in
the past! Congrats, it's just wonderful!

I'm still around, still TTC, fully ovulatory for over a year now thanks
to Metformin - but still not pg ... We're dealing with some minor male
factor (or rather, very unstable male factor), too, and I'm due to have
tube patency checked next week.

Hooray for ovulation! And glad that the met worked for you--it was a rather
spectacular failure for me. After six months on it my cycles, which had been
long but ovulatory (like 50 days, ovulation day 35+), were sporadic (between
20 and 90 days) and anovulatory. It wasn't until I had been off the met a
good year that I began getting the long and ovulatory cycles again, and from
there diet and homeopathy started to really regulate things. This successful
cycle I ovulated on day 19 or 20, and had been doing so for 4-5 cycles. My
good friend with PCOS insists that I don't actually have it--I have the
LH/FSH imbalance, I have the insulin issues, but met was absolutely hideous
for me and I never had the classic PCOS "picture" of weight gain after
menarche, etc. etc. Well, whatever I have, I'm glad it's under control and
hopefully we'll be able to have the large family we want.

Please DO write an update--how's the diet going?

Oh, that's too funny - you should have emailed me :-) I learnt a lot
from you re herbs, and I think of you whenever I answer a herb-related
question on my German PCOS list!

> Hooray for ovulation!

And how! I remember the total frustration during the anovulatory cylces,
thinking "if I O'ed, at least I'd have a *chance* at getting pg". It was
simply amazing to watch how my cycles did a complete turn-around when I
started low-carbing (within 10 days of Atkins induction I had a bleed,
followed by a 19-day anovulatory cycle, followed by the first
ovulation)! I wish somebody had told me this when all my problems
started at age 11 ...

I started taking Met 9 days before the first ovulation (finally, finally
getting it from my GP after everyone else refused), more or less stopped
(strict) lc'ing, increased Metformin and ovulated 3 times in a row
(cd28, cd25, cd19), then had an anovulatory cycle which I ended by
taking a pill cycle. At the same time, I met someone online who had had
problems with Metformin becoming ineffective rather quickly, and she had
put herself on a protocol of changing dosages. I tried that, too, and
it's been working like magic for over a year now! I take 2.550mg before
ovulation and reduce to 850-1.700mg during the luteal phase. That way,
my body is kickstarted or something at the beginning of every cycle.
I've never read anything official about this protocol - but hey, it
works! :-)

I also tried basically every herb or homeopathic remedy I could think
of, most of them didn't help at all. But now I've found a combination
that seems to work in addition to the new Met protocol - I don't know
whether all of the drugs are necessary, but I'm wary of changing a
working combination. So I take Met, 40mg of vitex, a homeopathic
compound remedy for hormone problems and baby aspirin.

From August '02 to July '03 I was also on thyroid hormone because TSH
was a tad high-ish and I thought it could be yet another culprit for the
long cycles I had. But I started to feel over-dosed in July and stopped
it cold turkey - haven't noticed any differences since.

Earlier this year, I had one slightly longish cycle (well, no ovulation
by cd 25 after O'ing cd17-19 for several months), kickstarted my system
by doing another round of Atkins induction, and O'ed 10 days later.
Psyched by this success and the desire to lose weight again (see further
down), I stopped Metformin and did "just Atkins". And had a 2-month an
ovulatory cycle which scared me into looking for yet another new gyn to
discuss IF treatment because I didn't see a way out any more :-(
I stopped the anovulatory cycle with a bc pill cycle (works like magic
for me!), and O'ed cd12 directly afterwards. The following ovulation was
cd15, and I'm guessing that I'll be 'round the familiar cd18/19 this
cycle. But I'm dealing with quite a lot of anxiety and the occasional
panic attack while waiting to O - hence the attempt at getting something
for ovulation induction.
When that failed, I had quite a major breakdown - I guess most days I
don't even realise myself how long I've been at it and how much of a
strain it puts on me and also my husband. We haven't had a single
married day w/o worrying whether we'll ever have a family. And we're
planning a big change (career change/setting up a business and moving
countries) which is on hold for as long as I don't conceive. Adoption
isn't an option in our current situation (not out of choice - I'd *love*
to adopt, but it's bureaucracy), so I often feel quite stuck.

> Please DO write an update--how's the diet going?

Well, that's *my* spectacular failure! I lost around 35lbs last year and
re-gained it all (and I'm worried even more, I'm avoiding the scales at
the moment). I'm one of those freaks (I've heard of a few other ones)
who *gain* on Metformin ... The only way for me to lose weight is to go
on the strictest possible LC diet (i.e. Atkins induction) and not take
Metformin - but then I'm totally infertile, so that's simply not an
option at the moment.

Apart from the TTC tsores, I'm keeping quite busy with a PCOS email list
I started 18 months ago - there wasn't any kind of PCOS support in
German, so this is the first (and still the only) possibility to get
German-language information. We have a few Swiss and Austrian members,
too, though I think their situation is slightly better with more
well-educated professionals. It gives me a lot of satisfaction that I
can help other women avoid some of the problems I've had :-)
A couple of weeks ago, a few fellow members and I started getting
organised to set up a national PCOS advocacy group, and it's a lot of
work, but we're making progress! I'm very excited about this!

Anyway, that's my life at the moment ... I've done and gone through
things I wouldn't have thought imaginable two years ago, and I found out
I have more patience than I ever thought I had ;-) I wouldn't want to do
away with the experience, I have learnt a lot and met some amazing
women. I just hope I'll get my reward in the end ...
