Thanks to all who responded to the poll on hospital births I posted last
week. Here's a summary of the results for anyone who's interested.

I got information on 29 different hospitals where mkp'ers have either
given birth or are planning on giving birth.

97% (28 of 29) allowed free movement and walking around under normal,
unmedicated conditions.

Provided either standard in the LDR room or upon request:
Chairs or rocking chairs: 72%
Shower, tub, or jacuzzi: 79%
Birthing ball: 52%
Birthing bar: 45%

21% of the hospitals surveyed use an IV automatically as standard
policy.
21% insert a hep-lock automatically as standard policy.

69% require intermittent fetal monitoring under normal circumstances as
standard policy.
17% require constant fetal monitoring under normal circumstances as
standard policy.

Standard policy on food/drink consumption:
Ice chips only: 21%
Clear liquids/light menu: 34%
Unlimited: 34%

90% allow people to play their own music; of those, 3 hospitals (10%)
required people to bring headphones to do so.

Thanks, Jennifer.

I don't know how much you realize it, but this information could
be a lot of help to first time moms trying to decide whether it
is reasonable to ask for a particular thing, or ask for reconsideration
when it is routinely denied.

Thanks again for posting,
Larry
