View Full Version : Swing recommendations?
What baby swings worked for everyone here? I know the new baby may not
even like it, but I'd like to get her at least something new that her
big sister didn't have!!

The best recommendation I have is don't buy one until AFTER the baby arrives
if you can wait, so you can take her to the store and try out several types
and speeds first. My baby, sister's baby, and cousins baby all had totally
different responses to swings. My baby hates all of them, he likes
vibrating chairs like

My sisters baby like high speed rocking while totally lying down in a crib
style swing, and my cousins baby had to be sitting up and swinging slowly
from front to back.
The little ones can be quite opinionaned.
Battery operated swings were usually quieter than wind up ones, but the
noise was anther reason to try swings out with the baby, so you know if it's
too loud for the baby to sleep through.

I'm totally excited that I will be getting a cradle swing this time. They
are the kind that swing not only front to back but from side to side.
Hunter didn't like the swing but I used it for 30 minutes every day with
Luke until he outgrew it at 3-4 months. He sat in there while we ate supper
and it was really nice.
My old one was an older wind up one. It was nice not having to replace the
batteries but the winding was loud and generally woke the baby up if he was
asleep. It also didn't have the seat tray that swung away so getting him in
and out was not always easy.

I was given a Fisher Price Swing n' Meals high chair/booster chair/3-speed
swing from my mom for DS's baby shower. I actually love it. DS loved it as
well. It kind of got mangled and broken and we did use it for DD, 4 and a
half years later, but it wouldn't stand properly because the legs spread too
far apart, which caused the swing to not swing, so we used a phone cord tied
around the legs to hold them closer together.
Went out to the stores to hunt one of these same swings down for DD, with no
luck. Couldn't find them anywhere, and found out that they didn't make them
anymore. We did get lucky, though, about 2-3 weeks ago, and found a lady
selling hers for really cheap, and it's in perfect condition, so we picked
it right up.
I, personally, love this chair. The cons, I've found, is that it requires a
lot of space, and that's something we don't really have that much of, but I
like that you can kill 2 birds with one stone - baby swing PLUS high chair,
so you don't need to go out and buy the items on their own.
Just my 2¢. I, personally, love this swing, and it runs on batteries, and
seems to run forever.

We've got the Fisher Price Ocean Wonders swing, and my daughter loves
it. She tries to catch the fish...

don't have one and haven't missed it, yes, you need somewhere to put the
baby, and we found a bouncy chair sufficient. We literally had the cheapest
no frills chair and it's done us fine. We did end up acquiring a slightly
fancier one with vibrations, music etc, but the things we and Ada like about
it was the arch of toys and the fact that it could be fully reclined, so I
had no need to move her if she fell asleep. It was fairly similar to the one
Heather posted a link to, but we almost never used the vibrate and music
facilities, so never had to change the batteries!

We were given the Fisher Price Aquarium swing as a hand-me-down. The
batteries seem to have good life (although we didn't use the swing feature
often, she just liked the position) and it folds up which was nice when we
moved it from room to room figuring out where it would be most convenient.
Never took it out of the house and we don't use it anymore (she's 4 months
and has moved on to the jumper and exersaucer)
However, having now had the baby in daycare, I can say that I wish we'd had
a bouncy seat instead. The swing is great if they like motion, but my
little one didn't care much either way. The bouncy seat at daycare though
is a huge hit because of the dangling toys! Toys don't dangle well from our
swing, and then of course she can't kick something or she'd swing out of
position. The hanging fish from the sides are impossible to reach for a
young baby and I don't think an older baby would be too interested.
The daycare has a convertible rocker that works for infants and toddlers.
It's basically like a bouncy seat that can convert to a toddler rocker
later. Madi loves it so much I wanted to get her one for home, but our
Walmart has been out of stock. Here's a link to the Fisher Price site:

I have that infant to toddler bouncy chair/rocker but my first daughter
hated it with a passion. She really did love the swing I put her in at
my friends house... She wanted to be up in my arms at all times, and
also didn't mind being on her play mat for a few minutes at a time...
When there was only 1 child it was easy to always cater to her needs,
it didn't matter if supper wasn't on the table until 9pm. This time
life will be different, in the best possible way of course! :)
I will probably buy the Ocean's Aquarium swing...
