I was sweeping up all the sawdust the hamster kicks out of her cage
earlier, and I wondered what pets you guys have, or would like...

I have a cat (Tabitha), 2 rats (Rodney and Roland) and a hamster (Suki).
I would like chipmunks! They are nuts!!! I also quite like the look of
chinchillas. I couldn't be doing with birds though - my family has
budgies, and the noise drives me mad :)

I used to have lots of pets, including a terrapin, bunnies, guinea-pigs,
gerbils and dwarf hamsters, but DH says 4, plus a baby, is enough for
now :) (He, by the way, creates more of a mess under his computer desk
each day, than the hammy or rats could *ever* kick out of their cages ;) )

When I was growing up in New Jersey, I had 3 guniea pigs but when it
turned out one of them was male, at one point I had 12 (but we gave the
babies away so it wen back to 3 :), a dog, a cat, a bird, newts, a
ferret. I used to have hermit crabs but gave them away (when they die,
they crawl out of their shells and it was really gross) we also used to
have fish at one point.

Oooh... I HATE this task!

We have a cat, Sally, and it's actually DS's cat and he named her :D I also
have a shih-tzu, Odd Job, a small 10gal tank of goldfish varieties, pleco
and corys, an 80gal tank of cichlids - firemouth, Jack dempsey, blood
parrot - also rainbow shark, pleco and a swarm of giant danios, DD has a
20gal tank of guppies, 2 glass knifefish, frog, mollies... a 72gal tank
split to have some goldfish, danios, betta, and 2 salamanders, then a 86gal
tank with tinfoil barbs, pictus catfish, columbian sharks, goldfish and
plecos. I like my fish and tanks :D
We also have 3 chinchillas, Mama Kiki, Daddy Daxter and a baby that has no
name. Also, stashed away at my dad's work due to no room or much interest,
I have a hot tub liner of red ear sliders (13 last count) and a tank with my
Chilean Rose tarantula.

I used to have a colony of hamsters lol Couple gerbils, few mice and we've
had budgies, but I cannot stand birds for a few reasons and I am glad and
greatful they are long gone. I've had iguanas in the past - was up to 5 at
one point - stashed at my dad's work.
I would love to have a rat, but there's no rats here and they're illegal.
I would also not mind having horses again, but in a townhouse in the city,
that seems fairly impossible :(

Blimey!! Do you live in an aquarium? ;) You should charge people
admissions :) Tabitha is more DH's kitty, she is a definite daddy's girl
who sees me purely as a waitress :)

Aw, do you know what sex the baby chinchilla is yet? I was very jealous
when you said you'd got chinnies :)

Aww, I had masses of hammies/dwarf hammies at one point - I used to
dedicate on of my days off just to cleaning them out :)

Rats are illegal? Awwww, I love my ratties. My ex-husband didn't love my
last rats though - I didn't realise he didn't like them though until I'd
bought them. I bought them and a huge cage, got it all set up with the
tubes etc, hoovered up any sawdust I'd spilt and souted "ta-da!!" as he
walked through the door! Well, I won't repeat what he said, but put it
this way, it wasn't pretty ;) A year on though, he'd gone (not rat
related!), and I still had my rats, so I figured rats were the better
investment :) I'm lucky that DH loves my ratty boys :))

Aww, guinea-pigs are fantastic :) Mine had surprise babies too - the
cutest things I've ever seen!

The hermit crabs, while I was about to say sound cool, do in fact sound
a bit gross now you say that about them :)

Oh, I wish! I just love my fish and tanks. They're pretty much my material
pride and joy! Everyone's always got some sort of comment about the
tanks... I actually got 2 different friends into fish because of mine :D
For a friend's birthday one year, I picked him up a very small 5ish gallon
fish tank starter set thing, and also a few easy, basic starter fish. Now
he's up to a couple bigger tanks and just loves fish. He blames this on my
fish fetish lol
The cat seems to like me, but I just don't like cats. They're too smart and
independant for me. DH is the cat person. The dog is mine, and always has
been. He doesn't seem to listen to anyone, but I have the best chance with
him, and he follows me around like a lost puppy ;) He howls and howls, head
pointed straight up and wailing, if I leave the yard and he's stuck in
there. Had the neighbours looking out their door one time when he did that
lol

No, we have no idea what the sex is. I call him a he, but mainly because I
think I like to call everything a he... ;) It's only a couple weeks old.
You can have him if you want! We do NOT want to keep this little one, and
as it is right now, we're going to see if the people we got the female from
originally would like the baby. They had said they might consider taking a
baby if we ended up with any, so I figured we'd ask them first but they've
yet to get back to us about it. I just do not want to keep a 3d chin at
this point. DH is the one that's taken the most to the fuzzy rats, yet I am
the one that has problems with the baby... He's just too cute to not love!

Well, that's what it takes! I had all these hamsters and the pair of
gerbils back when I was about 12ish... My mom would force me to clean ALL
the cages once a week or 3 times in 2 weeks, and that was nearly a full
day's job! Now I just don't have the time and patience. We tried the
hamster idea a few years back but nah... I ended up passing on it when the
rodent died a couple years after lol

Heh I love rats. A friend moved from here to Louisana back in high school
and she had a pair of rats. I just think they're kinda cute. They're
illegal everywhere in Alberta, and I could be wrong, but I think Alberta is
the only province in Canada that is rat-free. DH likes everything, but he
isn't crazy about the dog. Dog is yappy, and I think that he doesn't like
the dog even more because he can't get the dog to listen. It's alright, he
can't get the dog to listen but I can, and I can't get the kids to listen
but he can! ;)

We have a cat (Rosemary--she's about 11 years old and was a stray) and
two dogs (Balthazar--he's a strange mix: curly tail, German Shepherd
coloring/markings, floppy ears, medium size--he was from the pound; and
Zara--she's a 3.5 month puppy that seems more or less black lab).

We did have zebra finches at one point for my son who is obsessed with
birds, but taking care of them was just too much for him.

He would like a snake! My 5-year-old is always talking about what
animals he would like. The fact is that while all my kids are big
animal lovers, my husband is allergic, and I am not a big animal fan.
I love our particular animals, but I don't crave the companionship of
animals. I have enough people to love and enough kids to take care of!
So the animals are because the kids want them and I think it's good
for kids to have a dog.

As for all those rodent-type things, to me they are just furry rats.
;-) Having had rats--unwanted--in my house, that does not appeal to me
at all! Chacun a son gout, as they say. :-)

We have no pets at the moment, but I'm considering maybe getting some
fish (tetras or something tropical) for DS1 to ohh & ahh over.

I already have a tank & filter, but my heater broke, so that's all I'd need.

We have one cat named Otis. Him and Luke are thick as theives ;-). We have
one dog, an English Spring Spanial named Chance. Dh has a small aquariam in
the basement and I have a fish bowl in the kitchen with a Beta in it. I
just recently lost my old cat Rudy. He was 17yo.

I'm not much of a dog person but I love cats. I could be the crazy cat lady
;-). I've had a hamster before. They make to much noise all night long.
I've also had a guinea pig. They are OK. Rats...no thank you. Snakes and
god forbid an iguana - no thank you. If my kids ever insist on a reptile I
could maybe share space with one of those tiny lizards or perhaps a frog,
lol. I'm not a bird person either. I agree that chinchillas are really
cute. I've heard they aren't cuddly at all though.

I find this untrue. Friendly and cuddly, social animals. Ours are,
anyways, and so was the one we had before. Both of the adults will walk
right up your arm from the cage, they get free roam time and will follow you
around, jump up on the counters and 'visit' and I even have the problem of
standing at the sink with one or the other sitting and 'supervising' the job
I'm doing while doing the dishes. I've sat through almost an entire movie
with them on my lap in the evening, and even the baby, we've been handling
him (her) since the day we noticed it was there in the cage.
I find that it could be the way that you raise them and interact with them.
I did have a friend, however, that had a pair of males that loved eachother
and got along fine, but they weren't manhandled like ours are and hers
tended to get a bit snappy with people. Our guys are used to the cat and
will snuggle with her at times if she's sleeping, the dog, which THEY seem
to torment and the kids just as well as adults. They seem to not really
care to sit with the kids much at all, though, so maybe it could very well
be how you raise them and keep them? I like 'em 'cause they're soft :D

I think they look adorable! I've never had one and haven't ever known
anyone that has one. That is what the pet store guy said. He was trying
to get Luke to ask for a rat :-P. I did know a lady with a couple ferrets.
She really liked them. I wasn't drawn to them but I wasn't freaked out like
I am with some things, lol. I'll stick with cats. Someday I might get one
of those great big giant breeds. :-)

Yeah, I had animals growing up, started with a cat, and added a
terrapin, a gerbil, a rabbit and guinea-pig - all rescues. Apart from
the cat, they were my pets, and so it taught me to take responsibility
for them all. My nephew has a hammy and a cat and he's enjoying looking
after them. I want my baby to grow up with animals too, but I don't
think I fancy a dog - walks in the rain/snow/cold put me off :)

Sounds like a good idea - fish are very relaxing to watch, and easy to
care for. DH says our cat would eat them tho, so get an extra fishie for
me :))

I'm sorry to hear about Rudy. I love your pets names though - especially
Otis!

Me too :)) We were thinking about getting a kitten for Tabitha as she's
quite maternal, and is also an indoor cat - her choice, so sometimes I
worry about her having enough company etc - she talks to a stuffed mouse
:/ But I figure I can't be doing with a new baby and a cat baby at the
moment!

I've had a hamster before. They make to much noise all night long.

DH oils our hammy's wheel with vegetable oil to silence it - oh, that
was such a good night when he discovered that little trick!! If I had a
frog (which I would love), it would have to be a tree frog - they are
the cutest things ever I think, and I have pics of them everywhere! I've
heard chinnies aren't cuddly either - it's a shame as they are so cute
and fluffy and nice to touch - although a bit too fluffy - they seem to
be all fluff and no chinchilla, a bit disconcerting when you try to pick
them up!

I got a hamster from a pet shop once that had a sign on his cage saying
"free with any cage". I asked why and the pet shop guy said it was
because he was so viscious, and had already been returned. Feeling sorry
for the little guy, and liking a challenge, I said I would take him
(lol, yes, with a cage ;) ). I got him home, and nervously opened the
box, fearing the worst - he just sat in my hand and had wash, and was
the soppiest out of all the hammies I ever had. I guess maybe he was
homed with kids before that had been a bit rough with him, or that there
were other animals about - they used to make him a bit jumpy.

DH's sister has one - and she's in Canada for 6 weeks at the mo - I was

have his own holiday. Next time though.... ;)

My neighbour used to have some kinda ferret things, they were cute, but

scream the back yard down!

These weren't really supposed to ever be out of the cage. Supposedly
they can't bond with humans. They escaped a couple of times and it was
a nightmare getting them back in. And it stressed them so much that a

Dogs are a lot of work. We have a yard so we don't have to walk the
dog for exercise, but he does enjoy getting out. And we take him to
the new off-leash dog park.

Words cannot describe how horrific it was. They made off with a whole
loaf of bread. No food was safe. They were coming up from the
basement and nesting IN THE DISH CABINET.

I've owned lots of cats but Rudy was the best. He didn't have any bad
habits :-) Luke named Otis. Rudy was given to me as a Christmas gift from
my roommates when I was in college. Rudy is short for Rudolph. Chance was
named when dh bought him. I'm so not a dog person although I did have them
when I lived in the country. I don't mind the animal itself but they are
way to much work and Chance is hyper so not the greatest family pet. He's
very old now so we won't have him much longer. Personally I believe in
putting animals down once they get to a certain point but dh will not do
that no matter what. Him and his brother had a lab before we married. I
finally took that dog to the vet myself when I could no longer go to sleep
at night for the guilt of making a good animal suffer like that. Chance
isn't suffering now but he is old.

No kidding :-) I was worried about Rudy but he really liked it when Otis
came. When Otis got big he started kicking Rudy out of his spots (like off
my bed) which was kind of frustrating/sad.

I've always had farm cats or shelter cats but this one is neat if I was
going to buy a breed. http://www.ragdoll-cats.org/

Otis is fence post ugly but his personality is great and he's wonderful with
Luke. He's big too. Long and tall. He weighs about 15lbs but the vet said
he could easily reach 20 if I didn't watch it. He is quite a hunter as
well.
