View Full Version : OMG... CPC???

OK so my dr. called me up and said I needed to go to a different clinic
and get another ultrasound. I just had my 20 week and they all told me
the baby seemed perfect and everything. It lasted a half hour and we
found out we were having a boy. Everything seemed great except he
wouldn't flip over to the other side so they couldn't see the other side
of his heart. The tech said that may mean we'd need another ultrasound.
So that's what I thought they were after.
So then I call the other clinic and they tell me I have to go in for
genetic counseling before the ultrasound. I ask why, and she said, "Oh
that's just standard with all of our ultrasounds." I said, "Why?" and
she said, "So we can tell you about the cpc." I asked what cpc was and
she said choroid plexus cyst!!! I said, "What is THAT?" and she said,
"Your doctor didn't tell you?" And I'm like NO and she said well that's
what this visit is for and wouldn't tell me anything! So I looked it up
on the internet and found out that when they see it that it can be
associated in 3.47% of cases with Trisomy 18 and .46% of cases with
Downs syndrome?
I said, "But all my blood tests came back ok!" (I had quad scan)
God I have to wait until Dec. 1 and they're probably just going to tell
me to get an amnio (something I DO NOT WANT because of its risks). God I
am freaking out right now... at work.. I can't leave for another 2.5
hours... my dh is sleeping at home so I can't even chat with him about
it... OMG I am so freaking out :(

I can totally imagine! But keep in mind that the chances you found
still are *way* in favour of you having a healthy baby. And you don't
need to have an amnio of you really don't want to. Just let it sink
in first, read up on the info online and then talk to your doctor.
I think it's an outrage you were so misinformed about this!

If you have had a normal ultrasound, chances are very high that the CPC is
just a normal variant and will disappear in a few weeks. Lots of people are
walking around with CPCs right now. Having had normal blood work, your
chances of a problem are even lower. Amnio is your choice. It's the only
way to be certain if the baby has a trisomy, but level II ultrasound really
does a great job, especially with Tri18 which involves pretty significant
(and visible) abnormalities. Genetic counseling before a level II ultrasound
is the recommended level of service because patients need to have all the
info to make an informed choice, and it makes more sense to make a "decision
tree" before you are actually on the table.
Here's a reassuring quote from
http://www.dor.kaiser.org/genetics/OurServices/ChoroidCystsMain.html#FAQ1
"The chance that a fetus with isolated choroid plexus cyst(s) has Trisomy 18
is felt to be about 1% or less if the rest of the ultrasound exam was
normal. This means that there is a 99% or greater chance that the fetus does
not have a chromosome abnormality. Choroid plexus cysts do not cause Trisomy
18: rather, they are a sign that the fetus may have a somewhat higher chance
of having that condition."
Hope this helps!

I am so sorry to hear about what you are going through. I imagine if you
don't want an Amnio, you won't be required to get one. I debated it, too.
Do try and remain calm. Based on your blood work AND your ultrasound, all
may be well. This really could just be a precautionary step.
Is there any way you can call the clinic where you are having the Ultrasound
and try to get them to push it up for Monday or Tuesday of next week???

Ring your DR, that is not the way to be told something and not be given any
reassurance!
take it easy
