bullying (NYT stories) by Beliavsky
The NYT recently had a horrific story about a high school boy being bullied: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/24/us/24land.html A Boy the Bullies Love to Beat Up, Repeatedly By Dan Barry, March 24, 2008 He has been beat up repeatedly, and it sounds like the school district and/or the perpetrators...

Public Health Risk Seen as Parents Reject Vaccines by Jennifer Steinhauer New York Times, March 21, 2008 http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/21/us/21vaccine.html I hope the anti-vaccine zealots will read this article, but they are probably beyond persuasion.

A Room of One's Own by Beliavsky
I wonder at what age kids "need" to have their own bedrooms. With 4yo and 2yo boys and a 1yo girl, if we buy a 4 bedroom house and use one room as an office, and if we give the girl her own room, the eldest boy will never have his own room. I think the boys will just have to live with that, as...

moving away from co-sleeping by Beliavsky
I want our 2yo, who has always slept next to his mother, to sleep in a crib in our room. Any suggestions on how to make him less resistant to this?

when to correct a child's reading by Beliavsky
If my 4yo son is reading a book to me and makes minor mistakes, such as replacing "a" with "the" or reversing the order of two words, but he still understands what was written, is it better to correct (nicely) the errors or stay out of the way? Being corrected does not seem to bother him.

day care vs. live-in babysitter by [email protected]
I think mothers will usually take care better care of children than day-care centers -- some research on this is described in the book "Home-Alone America" by Mary Eberstadt. Is there any research on whether children (especially ages 2-5) are better off with live-in babysitters than in daycare?

middle vs. lower class parenting by [email protected]
There is an interesting article on this subject by Kay Hymowitz in City Journal at http://www.city-journal.org/html/15_2_holding.html . Although good parenting is importanting, I think she overestimates its effects and underestimates the importance of genetics. For example, she writes 'The...

Hi all, What's the policy on posting web links here? I often come across interesting sites for parents but don't want to annoy anyone if it's not permitted. Thanks.
