mastitis w/o fever?
 

breast redness - check
breast swelling - check
deep ache - check
sore while nursing - check
headaches - check
general aches and pains
upset tummy - check
general malaise - check
fatigue - check

No fever, though, and no discernable lump anywhere. Baby has been fussy
on that breast, and spitting/throwing up even more than usual, and
having loose poops (not that I've read that as being associated with
mastitis). Everything I've read says mastitis is accompanied by a
fever.

Maybe it's just a plugged duct and I'm also coming down with something?

I've been massaging, nursing lots on that side, compressing gently
while nursing, taking hot baths, drinking lots of water, and taking
advil. And looking everywhere for my magic bag (ds#1 uses it for a
blood pressure cuff while playing doctor).

FWIW, GIS came up with a pic that looks a lot like what I have:

The redness starts right at the areola.

I just hope it clears up soon. One day like this is plenty.

if nurse nurse nurse isn't working, go to see a doctor and let them decide,
I've had infections that have been severe enough to need IV antibiotics yet
not had a fever.

FWIW, I don't know what you meant exactly by "magic bag," but you can
fill a tube sock up with rice (real rice, not Minute Rice, unless you
want a fire) and microwave it for a minute at a time until it reaches a
nice temperature if you want a quick, easy, cheap way to provide moist
heat. If you're feeling crafty, you could even sew a small pillow so
that you could have whatever size and shape would work best. I'm
guessing that your magic bag is something similar.

Oh, yuck. That sounds horrible.

Well, nurse nurse nurse seems to be doing the trick, and going to bed
early/getting up late (thanks, dh and ds#1!!) helped a lot too. Still
sore, but I feel less fluish. Baby is nursing well on the sore side -
he nursed so much last night he woke up in a puddle this morning - and
that's helping.

OTOH, ds#1 has a cough and has been off his game, ds#2 sounds hoarse,
dh called from work to say he thinks he might be getting sick, and I
have an earache this morning, so I'm thinking it really is a plugged
duct combined with a flu/cold sort of thing.

Guess we'll ride it out and eat lots of garlic!

It's very similar. I was feeling too yucky to find a clean, hole-free
sock to fill with rice, though. The one I have was homemade by a friend
of my mom's, and while I believe it contains barley (or millet?), it's
on the same principle. It's actually several little compartments, so
that you can easily wrap it around without all the contents sliding to
one end.

Well you know I have a u shaped one you can borrow if you would like.

I am sorry about the sore boobs. As you know, I totally can relate. Off
to chug more antibiotics...

J ate all the minced garlic left on the plate after the broccoli was
gone the other night, which amused me.
