| I'm a US citizen who has been living in Canada for the last ~1.5
years.
| Canada is very similar to the US except the taxes are higher and the
| health
| care access is worse.
|
| Is the cost greater though? We're paying more for health care than for
our
| mortgage right now. And that's WITH company help.

Hard to say. We are corporate expatriates... my husband works for a US
company. They are supposed to cover all costs over and above what we
would
pay in the US. The cost of living in general is lower (or similar now)
because we don't get a cost of living increase like were were getting in
Puerto Rico (15%).

| My tree trimmer, as a small businessman,
| spontaneously launched into a rant about how hostile Canada is to
small
| business owners. He said taxes are killing him partly because 60% of
| employed people in Alberta are employed by the government (all levels
I
| think he was taking about). He said his brother in the US has a
similar
| business and keeps much more of his income. He claimed Canada was red
| communistic; I talked him off that ledge and we mutually decided that
it
| was closer to "pink."
|
| Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I have several Canadian friends - born
| there, lived their all their life - in Kitchener, Ontario. They love it
and
| ever since we've met them (back in '91) the more we go visit, the more
we
| compare notes, the more tempting it seems. Of course, that is just our
| experience and we could go there and hate it, end up moving back wishing
we
| had never left. I'd be willing to take the risk though.

Well I believe they love it but I question whether they have the
experience
base to compare it to anything else if they haven't lived elsewhere. I
loved NYC until I moved to Milwaukee (A great place by a Great Lake!).

Very true. They vacation and visit here frequently though that is far
different than living here.

I loved Virginia, I grew up in NY so this is where we came back to.I wish we
hadn't moved back here. Love the school system, hate the taxes. We live
within minutes (5 miles) from Lake Ontario. Very cool in the summers. Very
sucky in the winters.

Maybe if Kerry gets elected I'll feel better about it all, lol Im just
sooo unhappy with things in general right now, I can't even turn on the
news.

Thanks for sharing, Sharon.

However, I dont think I'd be a good juror for the simple reasons that I am

a) very opinionated and b) very stubborn. If I feel forced into something
(regardless of it being my right, my duty) I'd be angry that I have to do
it at all. Even if I ended up
finding it tolerable, the fact that I had to serve in the first place is
what would hold me back from being completely unbiased in the whole

process.

Even if you move to Canada, they still have jury duty and it sounds like
they do the same process there as they do here. Just remember, where ever
you go, you still will have duties and responsibilities to that country.
Unless you have the motto of having someone else do your job for you.

It's not the reason I want to move to Canada. And I don't have a problem
with duties or responsibilites as long as I feel they are deserved. I give
to charities, help out friends and family in need. I'd give the shirt off my
back for any of my loved ones. It is not my "job" when I am told I must go,
must show up or get arrested. It's being forced into serving your country
when as far as Im concerned, doesn't deserve my time.

You mean when he actually speaks instead of cracking bad jokes and blinking

Nope I don't think this is true. As temporary residents here in Canada, I
will never be called for jury duty as far as I know. I don't think they
make you serve on juries if you can't even vote but I have to check that.
At the least, I am unwilling to serve if I can't vote.

As for being called for jury service, I think it's random in the UK, given

I know I've never been called in ten years in the UK and until
recently only knew one person who'd been called in that time. Then a
few weeks ago two people I worked with got called at the same time.

I was called once in NZ, in the 15 months I was eligible and living
there, but had two grounds for being excused: it fell during my
University exams (which clearly could not be rescheduled) and I worked
as a researcher at a barristers' chambers part time, which meant I
could be accused of bias (its a fairly small bar in NZ, even in
Auckland). But in the end I wasn't required anyway.

A friend of my mother was once threatened with a charge of contempt
for not turning up. Being married to a barrister made that
considerably worse, but she kept that quiet, turned up with her three
small children (one breastfed) and got off. Gave her quite a fright!

| Rabidly religious people who admit they they rely on religion rather than
| critical thought and logic are not peers of most people and shouldn't sit
on
| juries. Recall that although most people in the US identify themselves
with
| one religion or another, they in fact do not use those values in living
| their every day life.
|
|
|
| Oh, foo.
|
| Religious people also go on trial, and need a jury of their peers, too!
|
| And there's a reason why a jury is twelve (or sometimes six), and why
there is a
| vior dire procedure in sitting a jury.

I've also got it from good sources that the Amish use up their horses with
gay abandon, having little concern for taking proper care of them. They tend
to buy up unusable trotters and pacers from race tracks at very cheap prices
and just use them up because they are relatively cheap and they can always
get more where the other ones came from.

Say "foo" to that!

Sort of reminds me of Falwell's opinion that environmental laws are
completely insane because the rapture will happen soon and there is no need
to ever conserve anything on the planet because of that. Heh.

NO! We are temporary residents. My husband has a limited work visa (can
only work at his company), I have an open work visa (nice of them but I
don't need it since I am still with my US Fed Agency), and our kids have
school visas. All visas expire in 3 years if I'm not mistaken and would have
to be renewed if we are still here then.

I don't think we could even apply for dual citizenship under our
circumstances, nor would I bother to do so. No reason whatsoever.
