I did. I read the basic material and didn't find anything alarming. I
agree with the theory of vaccines though.

the one concern that I have isn't about CO per se, but shingles. you can
only get shingles if you've had CP. shingles can be a real problem,
extremely painful. I have heard horror stories about them. I have had CP
as a child and hope I never get shingles!

I got shingles when I came down with mononucleosis (sp?). I was very
fortunate that it was contained to one site on my ribs. I also opted
for the extremely expensive medicine so I wouldn't have ghost pains for
the rest of my life.

Then you might want to be aware that you can get shingles if you've not
had CP but have been vax'd for CP. (Actually, there's a chance you
could get CP from the vaccine, too, albiet supposedly a milder case.)

I got shingles once under stress and it felt like a scald--very painful!
And I've seen how extensive and debilitating it is to the frail elderly, who
seem to be the main sufferers. Hoping to spare DS shingles someday, so
we'll have the varicella vaccine.

*afaik, that's not necessarily how it works. varicella vaccine
*recipients can apparently still get shingles.

The CDC says:

Can someone who has been vaccinated for chickenpox develop shingles?
Yes. However, a study conducted among children with leukemia determined
that after receiving the vaccine these children were much less likely to
develop shingles than children who had prior natural chickenpox. Available
information from healthy children and adults suggest that shingles is less
common in vaccinated healthy persons compared with persons who have had
natural chickenpox.

Is there a vaccine available to prevent or modify shingles?
No; however, a study is currently underway with a new formulation of the
chickenpox vaccine to determine whether vaccination of persons older than
55 years of age will reduce the frequency and/or severity of shingles in
adults. Results from this study will be available in about 5 years.
