Default Yoga in pregnancy? was Turning to yoga to combat lifestyle diseases

YOGA IN PREGNANCY? See below.

Free yoga classes on the web:

Obviously in person is best but...

AN INCREDIBLE QUOTE...

"About 30 percent of our diabetes patients no longer needed medicines
after a period of regular yoga practice. Even the rest of the patients
under our observation showed about 30-40 percent decrease in the
required intake of medicines," Patel told IANS.

Thanks for reading,

Sincerely,

Todd

PS My thanks to GaramChai for posting the INCREDIBLE QUOTE in the post
forwarded below...

There was no mention in GaramChai's post of Yoga in pregnancy. Are there
any pregnant women readers doing Yoga?

How about Yoga BEFORE pregnancy? I suspect Yoga makes birth easier. Anyone
care to comment?

PREGNANT WOMEN: MDs are closing your birth canals up to 30% and it is EASY
to allow your birth canal to OPEN the "extra" up to 30% - just squat, or
stand, or go to hand-and-knees, or roll onto your side (some Yoga postures
might be good birth postures) - but see the two simple WARNINGS in,

Rule 302, Birth and Trigon/Anthem (Glasscock) - and ACOG's Willett

Turning to yoga to combat lifestyle diseases
IANS Thursday, November 20, 2003

AHMEDABAD: Take a deep breath, calm your nerves and combat a range of
lifestyle diseases from insomnia and diabetes to blood pressure and
angina with yoga, just like 6,500 people did at a nine-day camp in
this Gujarat city.

Billed as one of the biggest yoga camps, the gathering included about
300 doctors who learnt yoga and pranayama to overcome their health
problems without medicines or surgery.

The camp, that concluded Wednesday, was organised in association with
the health department of the Gujarat government, the Ahmedabad
Municipal Corporation, the state chapter of the Indian Medical
Association and the city-based Diabetes Education and Research Centre.

"We usually associate yoga with religion and spirituality. But it also
helps in fighting modern-day diseases. That was our focus for the
camp," said Mayur Patel of the diabetes centre.

A panel of 25 specialist doctors interacted with participants at the
Sardar Stadium here during the camp that began at 5 a.m. every day.

The two-hour programme every day included sessions on meditation,
pranayama, "flexibility" exercises and yoga exercises, followed by
question-and-answer sessions with Swami Adhyatmanand of the Shivanand
Ashram who conducted the camp and other experts.

And there were actually quantifiable results to convince the
non-believers.

"About 30 percent of our diabetes patients no longer needed medicines
after a period of regular yoga practice. Even the rest of the patients
under our observation showed about 30-40 percent decrease in the
required intake of medicines," Patel told IANS.

Four people with a history of diabetes were called on stage to share
their experiences with the participants.

Shambhu Prasad Singh, a central government official, told the
gathering that he had such a severe case of diabetes that he could not
even walk. "With regular practice of yoga, I can now not only walk,
but run," he said.

"Apart from the sheer exercise part of yoga which burns extra calories
and reduces fat, the practice also balances hormones in the body. It
produces counter-hormones, which keep insulin under check," Patel
explained.

Regular pranayama exercises also increase the capacity of heart and
lungs and improve the immune system, he added.

It all adds up to better protection against heart diseases, diabetes,
asthma and depression.

"Moreover, many of the modern-day diseases have a psychological
aspect. As yoga provides mental peace, blood pressure becomes normal,
leading to a healthier heart," he said.

And here's some good news for all those seeking to shed those extra
pounds.

"You can reduce by up to one-and-a-half kg in the nine-day camp
itself," Swami Adhyatmanand told the participants.

Most people went back satisfied.

"I was suffering from vertigo and spondyliosis. I consulted many
specialists but yoga has given me about 60 percent relief," said
Amrita G. Christian, employed with an insurance company.

Amit Mehta, a software professional, was suffering from chronic
stomach problems. "I am feeling much better after the camp," he said.

Another camp is scheduled to begin Sunday to cater to more
enthusiasts. The Shivanand Ashram is also planning a 20-day
residential teachers' training camp.
