EMERGENCY baby now losing weight

... wrote: No, I've been checking his temperature and it's been normal, the doc says its very difficult to diagnose UTI in babies. Say WHAT? It's the same way you diagnose one in any other person. You get a urine sample. My son was cathed for a urine test at a few days old -- it wasn't especially fun but it wasn't traumatic by any means. I cannot OVERSTRESS how important it is to get him tested for a UTI. Anne, you need a sample taken TODAY. Do NOT let it wait. INSIST that it be done. My nephew almost died as a result of failure to thrive due to an undiagnosed UTI. He was 2 months old. Like your baby, he was losing weight. The initial diagnosis was insufficient milk supply, which was ridiculous since my sister could pump fountains of milk with a crappy hand pump in mere minutes. He didn't fuss and never had a fever; he was, in fact, a perfectly content baby who, due to no appetite as a result of the UTI, was "happy to starve". It was only AFTER he was hospitalized, switched to formula, and still failing to gain weight that the UTI was discovered. Alas, it was too late to save the breastfeeding relationship. While it's entirely possible that something OTHER than a UTI is the cause of your baby's weight loss, it is the first thing you should rule out. You DON'T want to wind up on formula only to discover it's not helping! |

EMERGENCY baby now losing weight
The hv has been weighing babies in the baby clinic apparently no others
have lost or even slowed weight gain, his weight gain had been slow in the previous 3 weeks, only 4 ounces. I'm going to rest and nurse and ear for the next three days in a hope to trigger some gain and increasing supply, however I have been trying to do this for 6 days already! You NEED to make sure there isn't an underlying infection or some other type of disorder. My dd was under the 5th% (dropped down a few percentiles) when she was a year old. Her doctor tested her for renal tubular acidosis. I think someone else on this group has a child with that disorder. My dd fortunately didn't have it, but it is one cause of failure to thrive. It's apparently one of the more common reasons for FTT. (not that it's all that common overall) What I'm trying to say, and others are too, is that sometimes doctors don't look any farther than blaming weight problems on bf and lack of supply. Since you say output is good, you think, then I'd pursue other reasons for the weight gain problem. That doesn't mean you can't also try to increase feedings or your supply at the same time. EMERGENCY baby now losing weight
Thanks for all your help. Starting today we are recording feeding details
and nappy details. I've ditched the pump as I'm not convinced I really have supply issues, but I think it may have been causing problems rather than helping. I've sent hubbie to try and buy domperidone, I'm not sure if he'll find it as it probably has a different trade name in the UK. I've also bought some fenugreek seeds, I plan to munch a teaspoon 3 times a day, which is the dosage I found on www.kellymom.com. I'm also drinking red raspberry leaf tea, I've read it could have a good effect and as we had some in the cupboard it seems worth a try. I eat oatmeal for breakfast anyway, but my sister has made me some flapjacks to snack on. We moved the baby in to our room last night, not sure what difference it should make, he still only woke once after 7 hours sleep, but I did wake him before I went to bed to feed and after his long sleep he only slept an hour before having an hour before having a long feed. I'm waiting til Thursday to see the doc as I can't get there any sooner as I need a ride due to having hurt my leg last week, I will request he does a urine test, I'll print out some of your replies to show him too. Thanks again for all your help. ----------- Anne Rogers |

Good luck at the doctor and keep us udated. -- Nikki Mama to Hunter (4) and Luke (2) |

EMERGENCY baby now losing weight
Anne,
\ Relax, it's only 2 oz.....The Nurse has no reason to threaten you that way....I tallied her wirght gisn since she was born and it is almost 1.54 lb.s a day!!!! You sghould be pretty happy about that. 2 oz. can easily be a problem with the scale, even if it is the same scale. It could have been leaning on something, or he could have lost 2 oz, but it isn't that much to be concerned about right now. Do what you are doing now...She may be slowing down in weight, mine did. Not all babies are chubby and yet they are still just as healthy as the chubby ones.....You are giving her enough to grow. She managed to gain more than 3 pounds and that has been during the beginning, if there was a problem with your supply or the latch then you would have seen a problem immediately. I am going thru a similiar situation with my son, he is 7 1/2 months and now he is 15 pounds and 24 inches. He is finally at the 3% line and well below the charts for height.....So, they are sending him to a groupl of specialists to see what is wrong. My doc has not even winced a concern about my BM, because there isn't an issues, there is a problem with him.........I wish you luck, and ldon't let anyone bully you about giving supplement, until you have depleted all options of giving BM thru a bottle or an SNS. After not being weighed for a few weeks last Monday my baby weighed 8lb 13.5oz aged 10 weeks 5 days. Today aged 11 weeks 5 days he was reweighed on the same scales he weighed 8lb 11.5 oz, a weight loss of 2oz in a week. |
