as the article points out the fact the women is taking antidepressants may
mean they are more likely to have all sorts of other problems. Also, as far
as I can tell it wasn't considering different SSRIs, but just any SSRI,
presumably on any dose.

My feeling is that there really needs to be better research, our decision
was for me to drop down to 50mg of Zoloft and take 5mg of folic acid (usual
dose is 0.4mg), but really we were just taking a leap of faith, no one
really knew what the risks of that were.

Exactly. This kind of study cannot prove causation.

"Homeowners who called the fire department were ten times more likely
to have their houses burn down than those who have never called the
fire department."

Therefore, we shouldn't call the fire department I suppose.

I just increased my Zoloft last night (on my doctor's advice), as I was
feeling completely drained and without any inner resources. At least I
don't have to worry about a premature birth -- I'm at 40 1/2 weeks --
but I agree, more research is necessary. Postpartum depression gets so
little attention except for when a mother turns psychotic, and
depression _during_ pregnancy gets even less.

Absolutely, and preventing depression during pregnancy would appear to have
a link with preventing or reducing depression afterwards, I know I had some
really low spots in my first pregnancy, though not what I would call
depressed because they were always only short periods of time, but they were
inexplicable lows, rather than circumstantial, then I went on to have very
severe postnatal depression (I was close to psychotic, but we now think that
some of those symptoms were actually drug side effects, but they were very
scary). Taking a low dose of Zoloft through the 2nd pregnancy, smoothed
those out and I presume has been part of me not getting ill at all this
time, along with some increases of Zoloft after the birth, though now, I've
been stable for so long, I'm back on the lowest dose and will probably stop
at the end of the current pack.
