What book/s are you reading now?
This may not be directly related to pregnancy but for me, it is
I have precious few months to read all books I can find because once I have two kids at home, there goes the time for books. So I want to know what everyone is reading that is NOT related to pregnancy or babies. Please list any book you recommend even if you are done reading it a while ago. Thanks. |

I'm reading Mel Levine's 'A Mind at a Time' I can't say I'm finding it a really enjoyable read for some reason but it has great information in it so I still recommend it. I just checked out 'The Discipline Book' by Sears. I've read the first two chapters. For some reason I don't click with his books even though I like the theory and the ideas so I don't know if I'll finish that one. Basically I feel like a loser when I read them. I don't need the punishment, lol. I read 'Siblings without Rivalry' by Faber and Mazlish when I was pg with Luke. I liked that one. I'll keep an eye on the thread hoping to get some good tips :-) Oh, I wish I would have read the 'No Cry Sleep Solution' by Pantley when I was pg with Luke. I don't think it was out then. I've heard good things about it. -- Nikki Mama to Hunter (4) and Luke (2) |

Why would having two kids remove time for reading? I'll admit that my reading took a bit of a hit with kids, but then again, I used to go through more than a novel a week, not to mention more serious reading ;-) I still go through books at a pretty good clip. I'm about to finish Lackey & Flint's _Shadow of the Lion_. I'll probably start Hobb's _Fool's Fate_ next. I'm also reading Levine's _The Myth of Laziness_. I recently scarfed down Kurtz's latest (umm..._In the King's Service_, I guess), Brust's _The Lord of Castle Black_, Ivins' _Bushwhacked_, Lindskold's _The Dragon of Despair_, and some others I'm not thinking of right now. If you're looking for fluff, I have a weakness for Georgette Heyer romances ;-) Best wishes, Ericka |

Hi Ted, I recently read and really enjoyed _The Girl with the Pearl Earring_. It's one of those novels with a beautiful sense of place -- you get to take a vacation to Holland, basically! Kind of related to babies, when I was pg with DS, I really enjoyed reading _The Red Tent_, a historical novel set in biblical times about a midwife. I don't need the punishment, lol. Oh, I just cannot STAND Sears!!!! Neither he, nor his sanctimonious wife. I always feel like they are so impractical with what they suggest - I mean, I apparently don't live in the same world they do. I was reading the breastfeeding book ( I think that was it) in the middle of the endless night that was the early days of my daughter's life, when she was eating about every hour around the clock, and I was nearly psychotic with sleep deprivation, and I came across freaking MARTHA talking about how the greatest satisfaction of her life was nursing her son in the middle of the night, because it was calm, and she could stare into his inky freaking black eyes, and feel so enamored with pure love (or some sanctimonius crap like that. I'm paraphrasing.). At 3:30 in the morning, after 7 weeks of catnapping, I was, to put it mildly, NOT ON THAT WAVELENGTH. IIRC, I hurled the book across the living room and burst into tears. I hate them. Seriously. I don't know what planet they parent on, but it isn't mine. Donna |

Here's my most recent: The Nanny diaries (forgot the author): listed as comic, but I found it heartbreaking. It is an interesting experiment of decadence in US society, for which a four year-old is paying. The disposessed (Ursula Le Guin): cold-war fantasy novel with an extreme but objective view on capitalism versus socialism, very interesting from many perspectives (for me especially, since I'm an astronomer and the main character is a physicist) To kill a mockingbird (Harper Lee): a classic, but I'm just now reading it for the first time and it's quite excellent. And my all time favorite: Memoirs of a Geisha (Arthur Golden): the life and love of an early 20th century girl who becomes geisha. Just a wonderful story. -- -- I mommy to DS (19m) mommy to two tiny angels (28 Oct 2003 & 17 Feb 2004) guardian of DH (33) |

I read a lot right now, mostly in the mornings before DD wakes, and at night after she goes to bed. I'm doing a lot of re-reading, because I haven't been to the library in a while. I'm re-reading the Spenser novels by Robert B. Parker, and I just re-read a novel that someone else has already mentioned - Diary of a Geisha, by Golden. I also just finished the new Steven King. At this precise instant, I'm reading Marian Keyes' Rachel's Holiday. I have read everything she's written, and I just love her. If you are looking for a well-written "beach book" (even though it's mid-winter in this hemisphere) pick up anything by her. My favorite so far is Rachel's Holiday, but Watermelon is wonderful, too.
