Abused Baby's Family: DCS Ignored Our Warnings About Violent Dad

Eyewitness News Everywhere uncovers a family accusing state officials of
ignoring their warnings about a violent father. Austin Cash, 19 months,
is fighting for his life. His father, Wesley Griffin, 20, of Martin,
Tennessee, is charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect. Martin
Police say Griffin nearly beat his baby son to death last month.

Austin's maternal grandmother Gina Hamm says the assault on her grandson
could have been prevented. She says Tennessee Department of Children's
Services workers ignored her repeated warnings that Griffin was abusing
his son. Hamm says, “We told them from the first time they got involved.
We kept telling them time and time again, you know, that he didn't need
to go over there to that house because we feared something like this
might happen.”

Austin was placed in his father’s custody earlier this year because his
mother has a drinking problem. TN Department of Children’s Services
spokesman Rob Johnson says workers were closely monitoring Griffin and
his son. They also say they did listen to Hamm’s concerns. Johnson says,
“To say that we ignored the case is inaccurate because we did have
people working with both sides of the family.”

Austin was airlifted to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis after
his paternal grandmother discovered him having a seizure in his crib at
his father’s home last month. Hamm says Austin has a broken right
shoulder, a fractured skull, and permanent brain damage. She adds,
“Knowing how precious and how smart of a little boy he was, it's very
hard to see him like this.” She says, “He was always just a perfect
little boy.” Hamm say her grandson’s injuries prove state workers did
not do enough to protect her grandson. She says, “If they would have
listened to us, it wouldn't have never happened.”

Johnson says Tennessee Department of Children's Services workers never
discovered any clear evidence that Austin was being abused by Wesley
Griffin. He says the department is reviewing Austin's case to find out
if what they can do to prevent this from happening to another child.

Wesley Griffin is being held without bond at the Weakley County Jail in
Dresden, Tennessee. He is charged with felony aggravated child abuse and
neglect. Griffin’s wife and Austin’s stepmother, Tiffany Griffin, 25, is
also charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect. She is also being
held without bond at the Weakley County Jail.
