"identity crisis" in identical toddlers? - long
Hi there,
I'm coming out of lurkdom / RSI-induced hiding to ask a question. Our identical twin girls are now over a year and a half old, and over the past few (1-2? 3?) weeks, they have seemed to have started what I can only term "an identity crisis": They have always both answered to "girls" (as in, "Oh, girls, stop crying", or "Oh, girls, come over here" or whatever). Over time, they started (And then were consistent about) answering to their own name, and pointing out their sister when *her* name was spoken and so on. However, now they have stopped answering consistently to their own name and either will answer to their own name or their sister's name. For example, If you ask Jillian, "Where's Clara's nose?", she used to point to her sister's nose. Now, she seems either not to understand or not to care and points to herself, or her sister, whatever. Ditto asking Clara to tell me where Jillian is, and so on. If they were younger, I'd say they hadn't figured out what "label" (e.g. name) goes with what "thing" (baby/toddler/person). If they were older, I'd say they were trying to fool us or atleast having some fun with the concept. AS it is, and given the apparent regression, we're a bit concerned. Of course being the Type A personality and a professional myself, I immediately wanted to get a referral to a pediatric behaviorist - but I realize that's probably overkill at the moment. We are trying a bunch of techniques to deal with this, and are open to suggestions, hearing about other people's experiences, book recommendations and the like. (I've got Entwined Experiences on hold at the public library, for instance, and some other twin books out from our twin club library to read when I "get the time". Thank goodness for commuting time on the subway/train!) Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this. Cheers, Barbara Mama to C&J, 19 mo ID girls, FA/ana? eggs |
