Default Spring water and formula

Ive been using spring water for my sons formula... but a friend of mine just
told me thats a big no-no. Has anyone else heard that? And if so, whys that?
I use it only because our water is terrible here... no one trusts it. And I
dont want to risk my sons health with it either.
I have a water cooler with the big jugs of water, and use that...

I'd never heard of that being a problem - but that doesn't prove
anything. Did your friend say why it's a no-no?

I've never heard of that being a bad thing to do.

The only potential problem with it is that there is no fluroide in it.
However, some of the bottled waters are now containing fluoride. Now
drinking fluroide in the water is controversial enough, but at some point
you will need to either have fluriode treatments on the child or be prepared
for heavy dental bills ;o) Most likely a dentist will be able to steer you
in the right direction.

Our local grocery stores carry "nursery water", which I think is
basically distilled water with flouride. Intended for mixing up
formula. Same price or cheaper than spring water, comes in gallon
jugs. Might give that a try if you're worried.

I read somewhere that you're not supposed to use mineral water because it
may have too much of some minerals and that would affect the baby. I'm not
sure if that's the same as spring water. When we feed DD water, we give her
the purified water from the tap. OTOH, although LA's water tastes horrible,
it's perfectly healthy.

What do you mean by "spring water"? (That's a serious question: I'm posting
from the UK.)

If you mean what I would call spring water - water bottled at a spa
and sold in bottles at inflated prices eg Evian, Perrier - then I have
heard it is not good for babies either.

Firstly, it may have minerals in it that could affect the baby.

Secondly, it may have lots of bacteria in it.

FWIW, over here it is recommended that you boil the water that you use
for formula.

spring water and bottled water are neither necessarily safe enough for
young infants

just because it is in a bottle doesn't mean it is sterile

as they get older, it isn't really such a big issue -- although if it is
home spring/well water, it should be tested frequently

I work in an environmental field, and have been involved in a couple
of large scale projects that involved testing well water in Ontario.
In wide areas of the province, even far, far from the cities, well
water is not to be trusted.

Over 60% of the well water in rural areas that we tested was
contaminated with fecal coliform as a minimum and many of those also
had chemical contamination. Sometimes the contamination got in via
malfunctioning septic systems or improperly sealed well casings
allowing pesticides, agricultural wastes like manure etc. to get into
the well, but in many cases, the ground water itself was contaminated
with gasoline from old buried tanks and a host of other nasties.

In most places you can take a sample to the local health unit and find
out for yourself. I would never trust spring water unless it had been
tested by an accredited lab for comparison with drinking water
standards.

Just keep in mind that overland flow of water during a rain can carry
all kinds of creepy stuff into a nice looking spring fed pool, so you
can be scooping up ick along with that apparently clean looking water.
