Your point is?
Most of this is outdated, irrelevent, and only applicable to Kansans in
1895.
Knowing where and how to find information and put it together into a
coherent presentation is more important than memorizing information that
will quickly become useless.

Oh , Middle-Western America in 1895!
I cannot even begin to cite all the ways you were so quaint, so hopeful, yet
so misled! You were so vain, and full of yourself, that you could not even
raise the thought that a different future was in sight. The vanes upon your
barns would shrivel under the harsh rays of the dust bowl sun, and your
farmers would feign strength and attempt to preserve their sites until the
banks came calling and their crops were razed by the drought and the fain
marauding ravens, eager to feast upon their sorrows.
Prayers and meetings at the holy fane had no effect. The veins of the people
and the land were bled dry, exsanguinated by the greed of those lured there
by grand promises, and the innocent ignorance of conservation, land
management and modern farming methods.

8th Grade Final Exam: Salina , KS - 1895
Grammar (Time, one hour)

1. Give nine rules for the use of capital letters.

rote memory

2. Name the parts of speech and define those that have no
modifications.

rote memory

3. Define verse, stanza and paragraph

rote memory

4. What are the principal parts of a verb? Give principal parts of
"lie,""play," and "run."

rote memory with a bit of illustration that may or may not have been
emphasized for memorization.

5. Define case; illustrate each case.

rote memory for the definition. A bit more interesting for
illustrating the cases

6 What is punctuation? Give rules for principal marks of punctuation.

rote memory for the definition and rules.

7 - 10. Write a composition of about 150 words and show therein that
you understand the practical use of the rules of grammar.

This is the only good question that shows skill in reading and
writing, but even there since it is only grades on grammar, it shows
nothing about the child's thinking skills.

Arithmetic (Time,1 hour 15 minutes)

1. Name and define the Fundamental Rules of Arithmetic.

rote memory

2. A wagon box is 2 ft. Deep, 10 feet long, and 3 ft. Wide. How many
bushels of wheat will it hold?

memorized formula for volume.

3. If a load of wheat weighs 3,942 lbs., what is it worth at
50cts/bushel, deducting 1,050 lbs. For tare?

memorization of arcane (today) measurements.
The terms would be unknown by most children today because they don't
need them.

4. District No 33 has a valuation of $35,000. What is the necessary
levy to carry on a school seven months at $50 per month, and have $104
for incidentals?

5. Find the cost of 6,720 lbs. Coal at $6.00 per ton.

memorization of conversion of tons to lbs. This is not difficult and
would be easily done by kids today if they had memorized the fact that
a ton is 2000 lbs.

6. Find the interest of $512.60 for 8 months and 18 days at 7 percent.

not a difficult problem for children today provided interest is being
taught.

7. What is the cost of 40 boards 12 inches wide and 16 ft. Long at $20
per metre?

Once again memorization of conversion factors is the critical problem
here.

8. Find bank discount on $300 for 90 days (no grace) at 10 percent.

9. What is the cost of a square farm at $15 per acre, the distance of
which is 640 rods?

Conversion of numbers again.

10. Write a Bank Check, a Promissory Note, and a Receipt

Why?

Easy if taught as a memory problem.
U.S. History (Time, 45 minutes)

1. Give the epochs into which U.S. History is divided

2. Give an account of the discovery of America by Columbus

3. Relate the causes and results of the Revolutionary War.

4. Show the territorial growth of the United States

5. Tell what you can of the history of Kansas .

These questions don't reflect knowledge that people need today. Aside
from that most of the questions are memory based and don't show that
the person understands anything about the subject that is asked about.

Yeah, they reflect the basics of math, grammar, effective
communication skills, and other non-essentials not found in today's
schools of self-esteem.

People don't need those tools today.
