Thimerosal More Toxic then Methylmercury!!
Methyl-mercury, usually from contaminated food, is very dangerous to
pregnant women. Methyl-mercury causes profound mental retardation, cerebral palsy, seizures, spasticity, tremors, and incoordination, along with eye and hearing damage in the unborn baby as a result of the mother's exposure. Organic mercury passes into the breast milk as well. The effect of thimerosal, an organomercurial preservative in vaccines, on cerebellar neurons dissociated from 2-week-old rats was compared with those of methylmercury using a flow cytometer with appropriate fluorescent dyes. Thimerosal and methylmercury at concentrations ranging from 0.3 to 10 microM increased the intracellular concentration of Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) in a concentration- dependent manner. The potency of 10 microM thimerosal to increase the [Ca2+]i was less than that of 10 microM methylmercury. Their effects on the [Ca2+]i were greatly attenuated, but not completely suppressed, under external Ca(2+)-free condition, suggesting a possibility that both agents increase membrane Ca2+ permeability and release Ca2+ from intracellular calcium stores. The effect of 10 microM thimerosal was not affected by simultaneous application of 30 microM L-cysteine whereas that of 10 microM methylmercury was significantly suppressed. The potency of thimerosal was similar to that of methylmercury in the presence of L-cysteine. Both agents at 1 microM or more similarly decreased the cellular content of glutathione in a concentration-dependent manner, suggesting an increase in oxidative stress. Results indicate that thimerosal exerts some cytotoxic actions on cerebellar granule neurons dissociated from 2-week-old rats and its potency is almost similar thimerosal is only 1/2 mercury (ethylmercury), so the authors should have compared 1/2 dose thimerosal with 1 dose methylmercury. The conclusion would then be that ethylmercury is equally potent to methylmercury in increasing Ca2++. The study also says that unlike methylmercury (which is usually bound to cysteine in a cell) thimerosal's potency is unaffected by presence of L-cysteine in the neuron, so under in vivo conditions the effects of ethylmercury are likely greater (by a factor or 2) than methyl. Finally, the study shows that thimerosal is more potent than methyl in decreasing glutathione levels in the cell, which is what other researchers have/are finding as well. This study was dont last year. |

This is misleading because thimerasol is not pumping in the brain like
methylmercury is and thimerasol is removed from the brain more rapidly. Jeff |

The reason why there is more inorganic mercury is that the body detoxifies organic mercury by turning it into inorganic mercury. This happens faster for ethylmercury than methylmercury (see the graphs in the paper above). The following paragraphs states: "Previous reports have indicated that the dealkylation of mercury is a detoxification process that helps to protect the CNS (Magos et al. 1985; Magos 2003). These reports are largely based on histology and histochemistry studies of adult rodents exposed to mercury for a short period of time. The results of these studies indicated damage to the cerebellum was only observed in MeHg treated animals who had much lower levels of inorganic mercury in the brain than animals comparably treated with ethylmercury. Moreover, the results did not indicate the presence of inorganic mercury deposits in the area where the cerebellar damage was localized (granular layer)." This indicates that ethylmercury is less toxic than methylmercury, because it is detoxified faster. Jeff |

Donna ********************** In section 2.b.a Dr. Magos quotes his research as showing that methylmercury treated rats had 1.55 (males) and 2.4 (females) the mercury in their brains as did ethyl mercury treated rats. In addition, the ethyl mercury treated rats had 3.4 fold more inorganic mercury in their brains. He states that this "excludes the possibility that the cleavage itself or the formed inorganic mercury is responsible for the brain damage. If this were the case, the brain ethyl mercury treated rats would be more affected than the brain of methylmercury treated rats (which didn't occur by his analysis)." The problem with this conclusion is that Dr. Magos expects the damage caused by methylmercury to be the same as that caused by a combination of ethyl mercury and 3.4 fold extra Hg2+. This is not likely as methyl and ethyl mercury would partition into the hydrophobic areas of the brain whereas Hg2+ would most likely react in the hydrophilic aspect of the brain. When you discuss toxicity you must consider both the dose, clearnace and the toxicity of the chemical. Thus, ethyl mercury, like that found in thimerosal, is safter than that of methylmercury. They do not equate. |

Haley, for instance, bleats and brays the claim that thimerisol is 50% mercury. While the one mercury atom does comprise approximately 50% of the molecular weight of thimerosal, this is a meaningless claim, as it has no bearing whatsoever on the chemiczal activity of any part of the molecule. My 16 year old son who is running a straight B average in high school chemistry pointed this out to me when I asked him to find a flaw in Haley's bull****. Now, if Haley is so inept as to make such a bogus claim on something that is so fundamental that it is taught in high school, what does that tell you about him? It tells me that he is a bull****ter. |
