If the doctor says that they don't usually use an aneasthetic, then say
that you INSIST upon an anaesthetic. He should use a topical spray and
also something oral. We used a tiny bit of sweet wine, but a doctor
might want something more medical :-) I think we used tylenol for the
next day or so ... it's been a few years, so I don't recall.

If the doctor is reluctant to use pain relief, find another doctor.
There's nothing wrong with using pain relief, nothing at all. And why
would anyone subject an infant to unnecessary pain?

Oh my........ I never heard of a doc not using any sort anaesthetic. Not
around here anyways. I would definitely look for another doc to perform the
circumcision.

The doc said they don't usually give the baby any anaesthetic. Is there
something I can buy over the counter and bring?

Hi -

Your baby should have both a topical anaesthetic (such as a spray) and
an ingested anaesthetic, whatever the doctor thinks is safe for such a
small baby. Probably tylenol. There's no reason whatsoever to perform
a circumcision without pain relief. Also be prepared for your baby to
nurse or take a bottle immediately after the procedure. (Food is very
calming.)

Whether to have the circumcision done or not is up to you, as parents.
Do what you think is best for your child.

I saw a TV program where a "routine cicumcision" was "cocked up" (pardon the
pun)...
They decided to turn one of the twin boys into a girl...
30 Years later he had his sex changed back. I think he now has a wife... but
no children.

In later life children may resent the mutilations inficted upon them.

P.S. This isn't another one of those "mother knows best, don't let any *man*
tell you how to raise your children" threads is it ?

I agree. Babies do feel the pain and there is research to suggest that the
early trauma may affect the way pain is perceived in the future. Every
organization that has made a recommendation on the topic has come out
strongly in favor of controlling the pain.

It sounds like you were not happy with the cosmetic outcome of the first
circ (no - they are not doing them different now) and that your doc may not
be up on the advances of the last decade or so. I think you should cancel
the procedure and find a different doc.

As for the "best practice" question and the response you got from one other
poster - the medical reasons to do or not do it are mixed with no strong
argument possible either way and the major medical groups are not making
strong recommendations. The mainstream Christian churches neither support
or oppose it. Most Americans are circ'd (and America is an Anglosaxon
society - at least for a little while longer) while most Europeans are not.
It is a personal decision that only you can make.

There's another reason not to do it: there is no way to know how much the
individual's penis will grow at puberty. The doctor will remove what looks
like the right amount, but when the boy grows into a man, his penis can

grow
larger than what the remaining skin can accommodate. Such boys may wake in
the mornings with their sheets bloody, because the skin of the penis has
torn in the night.

This is simply not true.

The AMA does not endorse routine circumcision for infant boys.

Nor does it oppose it - they say it is a personal decision without strong
support from medical facts.

Circumcision was designed to reduce a boy's sexual appetite by reducing

the
amount of pleasure sexual stimulation can provide him.

Actually, it first became popular as a matter of hygiene (that is amongst
people who are not doing it for religious reasons). It was believed to
reduce the incidence of VD - which is doesn't.

Some folks argue that circumcision cures a tight foreskin, but today the
usual medical treatment for a tight foreskin is stretching, not
circumcision.

No - it is circ.

Odd. I've talked to men for whom it was true. And traumatic. And
horrifying.

.....ah, I see where I'm miscommunicating. "Torn" sounds like catastrophic
rupture, not microscopic (yet still bleeding) breaks in the skin. I don't
mean a catastrophic rupture. But, the men in question were still horrified
to wake, as adolescents, with blood on their sheets.

Some baby boys are cut too tight. And they have to live with it for the rest
of their lives. That is reality. I stand by my statement that it should be
the reasoned choice of a person of legal age to choose such surgeries.

It is not possible. The tissue that is removed in the circ is not the tissue
that expands to cover the erect penis.

NO - as I said in my other post - the tissue removed is not part of the
shaft of the penis and does not stretch during an erection. If these guys
woke up bleeding or had skin that was/is too tight then there is some other
issue at play such as self inflicted trauma, Peyronie's disease, or other
skin ailments (that can just happen to be on the penis).
