Default Dandruff in 2 year old

I just noticed that my DD (2.5 y) has a bit of dandruff on her scalp. She
has a full head of (long) hair and it get regularly washed with a baby
shampoo (J&Js) and we also use conditioner on it to help stop the tangles.
I'm just wondering if anyone has some advice on treating her dandruff.
Thanks
Amanda

DD2 gets dandruff if I wash her hair with conditioner in the bath, not so
much in the shower. It doesn't hurt young kids to use Head and Shoulders or
any of those products for a couple days at a time. That's what I do if DD's
gets too bad.

Thanks Denise - I'll try DH's antidandruff shampoo.

I'm just wondering if anyone has some advice on treating her

dandruff.

Do you live in a cold climate? Is it winter now? Winter weather wreaks
havoc on the scalp - all that dry air and going from cold to hot.

I would recommend washing her hair less regularly. If it really is a
dry scalp, then she needs less washing, because washing strips away her
natural scalp oils.

Still give her a bath if she needs one, but skip the hair washing -
just wet it if necessary. Kids that age don't have the same amount of
oil glands as adults do, and they don't need to be bathed quite as much
(exception: if they've been playing outside and have dirt all over
them). My pediatrician recommended bathing & shampooing our girls once
or twice a week, maximum, in the winter. (You continue to "top & tail"
them every day with a washrag to get face, hands, and bottom clean).

If you're already doing that, then my hunch would be that your DD has
too much product build-up in her hair. The flakes may actually be
build-up and not dandruff. My DD12 (who needs bathing daily) has this
issue from time to time, because she's still learning to properly rinse
her hair without assistance and she also goes a little crazy with the
various hair product (believing more is better than less!).

Before trying a dandruff shampoo (which can be drying and also stings
if it gets into the eyes), I'd suggest trying a good clarifying shampoo
first. Use it for a week or so and see if that doesn't make a
difference.

Also, be sure you are rinsing VERY thoroughly. Use a hand-held shower
nozzle to direct the spray, versus having her dunk and swish her hair
in the bath water.

Oh.... and make sure the dandruff is white, irregular, and doesn't
crawl. :-)

If it is lightish brown (like the color of dirty blonde hair), moves,
or sticks to the root of the hair shaft, it may be nits and not
dandruff. If it sticks to the hair shaft but is white and irregular in
shape, it could simply be hair plugs, which are caused by build-up and
are not the same as dandruff. (A friend of mine found this difference
out the hard way... thinking her dark-locked child had developed white
nits, she panicked & shaved the child's beautiful head of long hair ...
only to find out later from the pediatrician it was only hair plugs!!!)

- no we are in Australia and its been very hot and muggy for the past
week.

We tend to only wash her hair twice a week, but with this heat she has been
sweating a lot and it gets too smelly to leave for more than 2 days.

Still give her a bath if she needs one, but skip the hair washing -
just wet it if necessary. Kids that age don't have the same amount of
oil glands as adults do, and they don't need to be bathed quite as much

Ahhh - now that may be the problem. I've never noticed flakes in her hair
(as if she'd been scratching), just a scaly scalp. She's not a fan of
having water near her face, so hair washing is done as quickly as possible.
I shall try to make sure that we rinse her hair well.

if it gets into the eyes), I'd suggest trying a good clarifying shampoo

She's not a great fan of the shower, but I can certainly make sure her hair
gets an extra rinse in clean water (ie not bath water).

crawl. :-)

LOL - I had a good look for any little nits after I noticed the dandruff!

My Pedi recommends selson blue.
If your using it in the bath, wash her hair last.
The stuff is not tear free and it turns the bath water into a not tear free
environment.
We use it to control cradle cap once a week. For some reason our son is
prone to it.

forgot....if its from scaly scalp (like cradle cap) you might just try
saturating her scalp with olive oil about an hour before you wash it.
or try other cradle cap remedies.

Here is a link to a lot of different remedy's that people have tried.

Thanks _ I had thought of the olive oil remedy, but decided that it might
just end up being *too* messy with a 2 yo.

Thanks - I think I've hear of that brand before so I'll see what I can get
from the chemist.
I have a sneaking suspicion that it could also be product build-up, so I'll
need to get a couple of different shampoos to use.
Thanks
Amanda
