Stupid Induction Story
On the front of the "Local" section in today's paper.
Female paramedic resuscitates OB who had a heart attack jogging in the park. A year or so later, she gets pregnant, immediately thinks of the OB. "Now comes a little glitch in the plans. The baby is due Sept. 22 - the same time OB will be in Europe. Neither the parents nor OB wanted another doctor to handle the delivery, so they decided to induce labor Thursday." (Thursday is 38w3d by my count.) "It was never an issue of if I was going to be there," OB said. "It was never discussed. I wouldn't have it any other way." The baby already weighs about 7 1/2 pounds, he said, so it's big enough to be born." Nice how the doctor's desire to be there means an early induction, not a rescheduling of his vacation. :P Phoebe |

It might be extremely educational for your local population if someone were to petition the court as next friend of the child for an injunction to stop the parents from going forward with their induction on the grounds that it could result in irreparable harm to the baby -- cite statistics on iatrogenic prematurity because of due date errors, error rate of estimation of fetal weight, etc. The result would be like a "trial" of elective induction. But who has time? -- Dagny EDD 10/6/03 |
