By modeling it for the next 15 years.

By not having unreasonable expectations for how long a 3 yo can wait.

By tieing the amount of time they will have to wait to something
concrete -- like, it will be as long as an episode of Mr. Rogers.

By setting out a clock (or even a timer) that they can watch.

By complimenting them every time they show any amount of patience.
