Newborn Eating
We spent almost two weeks in the hospital trying to get Holly to eat her
entire bottle without being tubed and she was doing fine. We got home and did get the wrong nipples for her bottle but now have the correct ones. The problem is, she is supposed to be on about 75 ml for her size but will fall asleep after eating just 60-70ml. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do? She has normal diapers and lots of dirty ones. We are just at the end of our ropes. -- ..oO rach Oo. |

She is eating what she needs, just don't delay the next bottle give it her when she asks for it, better still, breastfeed. Anne |

She has normal diapers and lots of dirty ones. We are just at the end of our ropes. My first baby had a hard time staying awake to eat in the very beginning. There were some major difference and I don't know how that impacts things but I'll give you the tricks I used in case they may be helpful. * I'd change his diaper in the middle of the feed. * I'd keep the lights dim. He closed his eyes to bright lights and then went to sleep. * I stripped his clothes off down to the diaper. The skin to skin (my bare skin) seemed to stimulate him to eat longer. * Gently give his chin a nudge to keep him going. * In the beginning, when it was worse, I'd sometimes even place a damp cloth on his back or head. * Woke him every 2.5 hrs or so to eat accept for one 4 hour stretch at night. I did that until he was demanding to eat on his own (around 2 weeks). He never went a 4 hour stretch again, lol. * Tried burping him in the middle of a feed. He never burped I was just trying to wake him up. * Messed with his feet. * Stroked his cheek which seemed to stimulate his suck reflex. Some of the specifics for Hunter that might not be true in your case (just so you know I'm not trying to indicate that the same things would/should work for you!) Hunter was full term, biggish, and plenty strong (no trouble with him being able to suck properly). He was very sleepy with jaundice. His diaper counts were very low in the beginning. When he 'woke up' at around 10-14 days he ate all the time and gained a shocking amount of weight in no time flat because he was physically able to eat like that. He ate straight from the breast so I couldn't measure amounts, I was just going by the time he spent on the breast. -- Nikki Hunter 4/99 Luke 4/01 Thing One and Thing Two :-) EDD 4/06 |

Newborn Eating
She may not need as much as you are told. Most people don't know how many
mls their newborns are eating. The baby eats until it is full, then falls asleep. As well, the baby will likely wake up and eat more again sooner than if they'd eaten the full bottle. As long as baby is eating every couple hours, seems satisfied, and filling lots of diapers, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Also, since Holly has had issues and is so new still, you're likely going back to the ped in just a few days, so you can verify that she's still gaining weight. If she is, then I really would just follow her lead. If she's not, then you'd have to work on ways to keep her awake, or wake her again to try to feed her sooner. But, it's pretty hard to get a baby to eat when they aren't hungry. -- Jamie Earth Angels: Taylor Marlys, 1/3/03 -- Who's got the Christmas spirit, singing all day long, "You put one foot in front of the other, and soon you'll be walking out the doooo-oooo-ooor! If baby only 5-10ml from finishing the full feed then I would not be too
concerned. It's a hard transition between tube to bottle/breast so it can take a while for them to get up to decent volumes of milk. What hours are you feeding? 2 hourly 3 or 4? You will most likely find whet she doesn't drink now she will want later Keep a note of how much she drinks from every bottle through a whole 24 hour period to check that she is close to what she should be drinking. If she was prem then you will most likely find that she will *wake up* when her original due date comes around and will start drinking more also. -- Pip My girls : DD2 Abby - 8 weeks early now 11 months and cruising the furniture. My daughter is now a month old, and rarely finishes a 2 oz bottle in one sitting. Which means we end up feeding alot more often - like every 2 hrs or so. She is gaining great, and has plenty of diapers too. Betsy |
