Why do something this unnecessary? I certainly didn't feel lucky when I had those twice weekly AFI ultrasounds from 36 weeks or so onwards. It was a royal pain in the butt and no fun at all! And those were ultrasounds for which there *was* some medical justification. -- Be well, Barbara (Julian [6], Aurora [4], and Vernon's [18mo] mom) See us at http://photos.yahoo.com/guavaln This week's special at the English Language Butcher Shop: "No parking passed this sign" -- hotel parking lot sign All opinions expressed in this post are well-reasoned and insightful. And weekly non-stress tests. Talk *about* stressful - lol. Medical reasons for mine too - of course nothing turned out to be wrong. Sophie- TTC #4 |

Larry Call it continued depression that I can't find out the sex when I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to know what it is and it seems like everyone else I know online has all these wonderful pictures and I have a fuzzy 8 wk old jellybean picture and thats it. LOL It would also have made the fears less about random birth defects from time to time, even though I know routine u/s don't detect them all. I believe many u/s may not be good, but 2 in an entire pregnancy isn't so bad, IMO. I had to have the one to date it due to very irregular cycles. Otherwise I might have been stuck with an earlier EDD and might have been unnecessarily induced. If I could afford it, I probably would have gone to an individual clinic by now. Or unlucky! Repeated medical studies have shown that there is NO
benefit to routine ultrasounds. Why do something this unnecessary? Larry Would it be necessary to have another u/s if the doctor *believes* the baby to be in the breech position at 35 weeks 4 days? Anna |

Why do you feel like you want to have another? Usually they don't do any
more at this point unless they want to check something specific about the baby--fluid level, size (which is usually fairly inaccurate), placental position, baby's position, etc. At my last appointment, the OB said Baby was "breech" and mentioned something about possibly needing to plan for c-section if the baby was still breech in 2 weeks. My appointment is today...I'm at 35 weeks 4 days. I'd like to have another ultrasound to confirm that the baby IS breech before starting to plan for a possible c-section. Anna |

Any particular reason you were hoping to have more? By this point, the only
thing they'd be likely to be scanning for is fetal size/weight/lie, and the latter can be determined by feeling your abdomen, while u/s is EXTREMELY innaccurate in determining the former. (In fact, you should probably be pleased that your OB is not doing a late one for that reason. Too many women find themselves being pressured into unnessessary inductions, or even c-sections because a late u/s finds that the baby is "too big" Naomi CAPPA Certified Lactation Educator I'm 35 weeks 4 days...today. At my appointment 2 weeks ago, the OB said the Baby was in the breech position because of where she found the heart beat at. She mentioned something about if the baby is still breech at my next appointment that we may have to plan a c-section. My appointment is today, so we'll see if she believes the baby to still be breech or not. If she thinks the baby is still breech, I'd like to have it confirmed by u/s BEFORE planning a c-section. My experiences:
#1: no ultrasounds #2: no ultrasounds #3: 37 week u/s to confirm breech position 37 week u/s immediately before and immediately after the external version used to turn her Best wishes, Ericka I'm 35 weeks 4 days, and have an appointment with my OB today. At my last appointment, 2 weeks ago, Baby was believed to be breech. OB said if baby is still breech (today) that we may have to plan for a c-section delivery. I'm hoping she'll at least order an u/s to confirm the breech position before we have to plan for a c-section. I also plan to ask her about using a version to turn the baby. Anna |

Why do you feel you need more? In the UK, it's normal to have one or two - a
dating scan and a detailed scan around 20 weeks. My health authority only does the latter (and it's not all that detailed, at that - not compared with those some of my friends have had). I feel the doctor should order an u/s to confirm a breech baby BEFORE planning for a c-section. I'll find out more at my appointment this afternoon. Anna |
