New at Cloth Diapering--Questions
Hello! My baby is 2 months and 14 days old. He weighs 14 pounds. I
decided to switch from disposable diapers to cloth diapers, and so I ordered some supplies and have been doing it for 4 days. I have 2 dozen DSQ prefolds and 6 medium size classic prorap covers. The covers say they should fit from 13-25 pounds. So far I really like cloth diapering. But I'm having one problem. Though the covers prevent any leaks from getting to his clothes (we've only had one leak like that), the diaper still leaks onto the cover, only at the legs. My son is exclusively breast fed and has runny poops 4-7 times a day. Every time he poops, the poo leaks onto the cover, getting all over the leg holes, but doesn't leak out. The cover is not reusable at that point and must be washed first. So this means that I usually go through all six covers most days, and sometimes have to switch to disposables to finish out the day while I wait on the covers to dry. I could always buy more covers, but I'd rather fix the problem at its root. Do you think the covers are still slightly too big? They do seem a little loose around the legs no matter how tight I pull it closed--perhaps the covers aren't holding the diapers tight enough to his skin? Do you think using a snappi would help with that until he grows a bit? Right now I'm folding the diapers in 3rds and flanging out the sides at the back, angel wing style. Would a different fold help? I've heard of a "poop pocket" would that help? Should I try a different brand/style of cover? Thanks for any tips or advice you can offer! -Lora |

Every time my breastfed baby poops in a prefold/cover, it gets on the cover. I used chinese prefolds with Bumkins, Bummi, and Bumpy covers with the same results. I had a lot of covers and didn't use prefolds exclusively, so it wasn't that big of a problem for me. I used Kissaluvs fitted diapers when he was smaller and only got poop on the cover with those when it was a really big explosion (but still not escaping the cover). I never tried a Snappi, but I've heard that goes a long way towards containing the messes. Now, I use FuzziBunz exclusively, so I don't really deal with a normal diaper/cover system. Have you tried the ParentsPlace.com message boards? They have a diapering board that's fairly active and pretty helpful. Manda |

Thanks for any tips or advice you can offer! -Lora When DS was that age, his poop would more than likely spill onto the diaper cover. We were lucky because we got a lot of diaper covers from friends and relatives - for a total of about 10 or so - so we just changed covers. I washed the dirty covers one at a time after I changed DS and hung it up to dry. Jeanne |

Yes, I think using a Snappi (or a Nappi Nippa, as they're called over here)
would probably help a lot - that's what we do. Having said that, we get better containment using shaped nappies/diapers rather than prefolds - but since you've just bought the prefolds, I'm sure you want to try solutions other than starting again with a different kind of nappy! Sidheag DS Colin Oct 27 2003 Thanks! I think I'll give that a try, can't hurt since one only costs $2.50. I'm sure my diaper/cover collection will grow with time, but yeah, making these work would be great! -Lora |

Probably we'll get more covers and things as we go along, so it will not be such an issue. Hmmm, maybe I can find some secondhand at our local used children's clothing store. Thanks! -Lora |
