Default Child Support rearages

My question is if my child support is in behind but I have paid my current
support how much can they take out for arrearages?

The short answer is a lot.

See http://www.dol.gov/esa/regs/compliance/whd/whdfs30.htm

Determine what they consider disposable income (gross pay minus
federal, state, local taxes, unemployment insurance, social security).
For anything else the maximum garnishment allowed by Federal law is
25%. For child support/alimony it's 50% (60% if you are not supporting
another child or spouse).

It could be less if your state has more reasonable laws but most states
don't.

So that's the answer to the maximum they can take. If you are lucky you
might be able to negotiate a lower amount that would give you enough
for ramen noodles every other night.
