Hello all,

Been lurking since finding out my wife is pregnant with our first.
EDD is 3-14(pi day). So far this has been an informative and
interesting group(aside from the inordinate amount of trolls on this
group).

My wife seems to prefer the iVillage group, of which I am sure there
is some crossover. Mostly a matter of our newsreader preferences I
think.

Anyways, hello to all and I will hopefully learn as much as possible
from you.

Question: Did you find out the sex of your new baby before the birth?
If so, why? If not, why? My wife is asking what I want to do when
we get to that stage. I am not really sure. I would like to know,
but also think letting things happen and finding out at the moment is
appealing as well.

Thanks

Jeridiah

Yay! Another geek! Even more welcome!

Question: Did you find out the sex of your new baby before the birth?

No, we preferred the curiosity and made a uni-sex nursery.

We found out the sex of the baby. I was so tired of seeing yellow and green
that I was going to scream if I didn't get to buy a pink or a blue
*anything*. We thought a surprise would be fun, but financially it was
easier on us to know. I wanted my first to be either really girlie or really
boyish. Meaning blue everything or Pink everything, etc.. Ok, so it turns
out that yellow is my favorite color, and looks great on Alegra.. So we all
won lol.

I don't think I could have gone without knowing though. Maybe for our second
I can deal with a surprise, but I doubt it.

Welcome and congratulations!! I've already had my baby but am addicted to
this group so I still hang out here. I guess having had my child I can offer
advice to others.

I did not want to know the sex of the baby. Having said that, curiosity got
the better of me at the ultrasound and I asked what sex it was. Fortunately,
the technician could not determine the sex because of the baby's position. I
am very glad I didn't find out as I feel it gave me extra motivation when it
came to pushing. I bought gender neutral clothing which can also be used for
the second child when he/she comes. I have yet to decorate a nursery as we
are selling our condo soon, but when I do I think I will also go for gender
neutral colours so it will be suitable for the next baby.

Hey :-)

Just popped out of lurkdom to answer this one, because it was one of the
first questions I posted on another pg newsgroup.

I have a son from a previous relationship, and with him, I chose not to know
what he was going to be.

This time round, I left the choice to my husband, because I had already had
the privilege of choosing
what to do before. He thought about it long and hard for a number of weeks,
before deciding that he thought it would be no less beneficial to find out
at the scan. His logic was that it would be a surprise whenever you found
out, that it would make the baby more "real"
and that some of the practical aspects could be easily addressed, like
choosing the name, (although that wasnt as easy as first anticipated).

So we did have the scan and ask, and it turns out we are having a girl.
Which is fab, because friends and family are all overladen with girls of
various ages and are busy compiling all their stuff to give to us

The results of the N/G post I made were pretty split about what to do. I
guess the end answer is to work out your own personal reasons for and
against finding out, and then go with the one that makes you most
comfortable.

Congratumalations on the pregnancy

Interesting side note to this: Talking to a friend the other night,
and when her sister was pregnant with their last "one", they had
requested to not be told of the sex of the baby. The doctor(s) had
been doing the other regular checks for heartbeat, etc but apparently
the babies had been playing hide and seek the whole time and one was
always "hiding" during her checkups. Big surprise at that delivery -
for everyone! Can't imagine what that scene was like.

Congratulations.

We tried to find out with each child, but the children didn't cooperate. So,
I didn't know for any of them. I do like the element of surprise though.

Welcome to MKP Jeridiah, and congrats on becoming a dad for the first time.
: ) I am expecting my first kid too, and my hubby is all a flutter. I bet
you are excited too eh? I know that I have found this group to be very
helpful over the last several months, and now that my time is coming to an
end, it's nice to know there are people out there rooting for me, even
people I don't know. : )

All the best to you and your wife, I hope her pregnancy goes smoothly.

Wow! That would be quite the surprise! You'd have to run out and buy seconds

Congratulations & welcome to the group! (there aren't usually this many
trolls--some people out there must be having boring summers or something).

We decided to find out. I felt like it would make the baby more "real" to me
to know (and it did). We also wanted to get psyched up for whichever one we
were having as opposed to be surprised at the actual birth.
