ear tubes in 4yr old
wrote in message ... On Feb 29, 7:46 am, wrote: My 4 yr old is having ear infection and for last few months (4 months to be precise) he has been under some nasal spray medicine. Last week the ENT specialist asked us to go with tubes. He did hearing test and found that there is a loss of hearing for 30 decibals(no sure if I am right about the units though ) According to him my son has fluid in the (middle ) ear and tubes shall remove all the fluid and hearing will be restored. My son has no problems hearing and talks well My questions : I am scared of the surgery especially the ansthesia part. Should I be worried? The idea of having my son under anesthesia is scaring me. Will he be alright? God forbid if something were to happen to him I won't be able to live.I love him more than anything in this world. I am very worried Should I ask doc to put him under anti-biotics? Will it dry the fluid and we can avoid surgery? Or am I worried for nothing? Please any thoughts , experiences will help. Appreciate you reading my message. You don't need to put tubes in his ears. There is another process, which was done to me personally. I grew up with constant ear aches, ear infections, trouble hearing, and the initial recommendation was for (the barbaric) tubes in the ears. Why do you consider tubes "barbaric?" An older doctor at the Children's Hospital, took a culture from my throat, and made it into a serum and injected me with it. It boosted my immunity system, and the problem corrected itself. There is no way that I would allow this to be done to my child. Commonly, doctors were also giving me antibiotics all the time, which was also part of the problem. They make your immunity system week. My father made the decision to take me off of the antibiotics completely. For about a month, I was sick as a dog, then I started to get better as my immunity system took over. Over 50 now, I'm very healthy and never get sick almost ever, when people get sick around me. I don't use those flu vaccines at all. Some doctors will know about this procedure, but not too many. They just don't do it anymore, because it is more expensive. Do some research, you'll find what I'm talking about. Toodles, Fred ) |

Appreciate you reading my message. Probably what's happening is that the infection is long gone but the fluid just won't go away. In that case more antibiotics won't help. In other kids what happens is that the fluid takes so long to clear, and the infections are so frequent, that there's usually or always fluid there. You're not worried for nothing. Anesthesia is scary and carries some risks. As reassurance, the anesthesia required for ear tubes is relatively light. Your child will still be "out", but the level of anesthesia required to keep someone "out" for a 20 minute non-painful procedure is quite different from that required for a nine-hour deep abdominal operation. Any time a kid goes under anesthesia for anything it's much better for the anesthesiologist to be a fellowship- trained (ie board-certified or eligible) pediatric anesthesiologist, not one who works mainly with adults. Fortunately this isn't a life-or-death situation, and there's no urgency to deciding. So you can weigh the second opinion too. But it sounds like you've already tried medical treatment with the ENT and it hasn't really fixed the problem, so in the end it may be worth doing. Appreciate you reading my message. All of my nephews and some of my nieces have had tubes placed at varying ages, anywhere from 4 months (which isn't the norm) to 3 years. They've had them in varying durations also. If a specialist is recommending them, then that is probably the way to go. There are risks with any procedure, and the professionals therefore don't take them lightly, especially when children are involved. I have read articles about children who have developed fatal and antibiotic-resistant illnesses after prolonged/excessive use of antibiotics too, so that is nothing to desire either. |

Have they tried Nasonex yet? One of it's off-label uses is that it's been
shown to improve eustasian tube function, and therefore help fluid to clear and stay clear. My DD was at the point of probably getting tubes, and Nasonex solved the problem without issue. Since her father has permanent tubes due to complete Eustasian tube shutdown on one side, and it looked like DD was going the same way, the goal wasn't as much to avoid surgery ONCE as the fear that it would be needed again and again (and, in DH's case, the long-term ear problems have caused hearing loss over time). |
