What to pay Mom's helpers?
I have two different 12 & 13 year old girls coming to help me (singly)
with our 5 month old son. I will be home, but will have them watch DS while I clean. What is the going rate for such help? I live in Portland, OR area, if that matters. TIA for any info -L. |

If they are just playing with your child and doing not much else I would pay them about $3 to $5 dollars a hour..... Its really hard to say... It depends on a lot of things. If they were to come two to three hours a week the money would still stack up that the girls could save for something big, or spend it during the week whilst out shopping or at school canteen. (and it might help the parents out with a few extra dollars a week they save to spend elsewhere ) I know the local babysitter rates around here are terrible and cost a lot hence Im lucky to have my parents willing to look after my children. Nic I used to pay my "mother's helpers" abut 1/2 to 2/3 what I would pay a babysitter. I also developed something of a mentoring relationship with them, which was satisfying for me and for them. The one who worked out really well, when she turned 12 I paid for her to take a babysitting class that included first aid -- she ended up continuing to babysit for me until she was in college, so it was an excellent investment! meh -- Children won't care how much you know until they know how much you care |

I hired mom's helpers when the twin's were tiny -- with a 3 yo and infant twins, I just needed a break! Sometimes I cleaned, sometimes I napped, sometimes I slept, and sometimes I played with the three year old, giving her some much needed one-on-one mom time. Since the "mom's helper's" I hired were only 10 or 11 years old, I couldn't leave them alone with napping kids -- they really needed to be supervised. I'd have loved to have been able to afford someone to help clean, but the $$ just wasn't there for it. -- Children won't care how much you know until they know how much you care |

I think I paid her about $10/week (this was in 1962-everything was cheaper then). grandma Rosalie |

Also, I don't trust adult cleaning help. Too many things that can "disapper" without me realizing until it's too late. I figure the kids need the experience and I need the help, so it's a win-win. -L. |
