Teaching kids to read pre-school
I used to frequent this group some years ago. I just dropped in to
give a bit of follow-up for things discussed some years ago concerning teaching children to read pre-school. We didn't teach him to read before he went to school at the normal age. He knew a few words, but we didn't get him to "read". At the time, I looked into it and it appeared that while teaching children to read pre-school meant that they would be ahead of those not taught to read when they entered school, by the age of 7 there was no statistically significant difference between those who learnt to read pre-school and those who didn't. Over two years later, I've just heard that my son got the best score in reading for his entire year group at his school. So that seems to indicate that not teaching him to read pre-school hasn't disadvantaged him in the long run. Just one data point of course, but there it is. |
