recommendations for training pants

We used Carter's padded underwear for this purpose. It does not have a
waterproof outer layer, though you can use rubber pants for this if you
want (we never did). We did use disposable pullups for some situations
(notably long car rides and naps). Your child will have leaks if you use
these, but they do limit the size of the puddle.

Good luck! My almost-3yo is strongly resisting "going potty" and insists
that he is not getting big! Sign... 2 down, 1 to go

Sorry, no idea about training pants. We just let them go bare in the
summer. For my eldest, we used sticker rewards for going potty. She
really liked stickers and we got some really nice sparkly ones that
she was allowed to select and stick on the potty (or the toilet tank)
each time she used it. Youngest never needed any rewards as she was
very eager to use the potty even before she could.

you are better off teaching him to be self sufficient i.e. put him in
clothes he can manage [not overalls and diapers] and show him how to use
the toilet himself -- we did this with ours at 24 months -- first they
had the potty but they soon could use the toiilet [we left the snap in
kiddy seat on it at all times and just removed it when we needed to use
the toilet as we were a one bathroom house at the time] you don't
toilet train by training him to 'tell you' but by showing him how to do
it himself, having him practice the skills and making it easy for him

the only time you need to initiate the process is before nap or bedtime
and before leaving the house

put him in cotton underpants -- the kind with the tripple crotch that
are also loose and easy to pull down is fine

Hi -

For us, training pants were a SECOND step. The first step was going
bare-bottomed for a few days. (With one child it took three days, the
other took five days.) Each child made a bunch of messes on the floor,
but then they figured it out and headed to the potty in time.

After that, we moved to thick cotton training pants with a rubber liner,
which lasted a matter of weeks while they figured out how to give
themselves enough time to get to the potty. (10 seconds isn't really
enough .... 60 seconds is often, but not always, enough. Five minutes
is plenty of time unless you're in a car or something.) We also had to
get used to telling the kids to go (not asking them) periodically, and
ALWAYS prior to leaving the house for any reason.

Being toilet trained, by the way, doesn't always mean being fully
self-sufficient. We kept our kids in sweat pants (no zippers or
buttons) for several YEARS so that they could go themselves. When in
dress clothes they still needed (and occasionally STILL require) help.
(They're now 6 and 8 years old; they can manage everything except
belts.) And we still take them in to public bathrooms ourselves, since
sanitation can be so iffy.

The brand of cotton training pants doesn't really matter, in my
opinion. None of them really hold the urine in, unless it's a minor
leak while en route to the toilet. All will hold in poops, should that
be an issue. None will do a good job holding in runny poops, in case of
illness. (We reverted to pull ups for several years if the kids had
diarhhea.)

We just used underwear with whatever cartoon character the kid liked on
them. I tried Gerber training pants with plastic covers on kid #1 but I
think they were just hot and sweaty and she took them off anyway. So we
went with plain old underwear.

No rewards. Kids weren't interested in that. Just lots of bear hugs,
kisses, and telling them what a big boy/girl they were.
