Default Need help finding pants for skinny kids

DS is terribly thin--he's been hovering around the 5th percentile for weight
since he turned one, but has maintained a height closer to the 40-50th.
(He's 3 years old now, and weighs about 26 lbs.) My problem is finding pants
that will say up, and I'm just wondering if anyone has found certain brands
which seem to work better for skinny kids. I had been keeping him in
overalls, but now that he's potty training, that isn't working out so well.
He lives mostly in sweat pants, and those are great, but now and then I'd
like to put him in a pair of pants or jeans, and if they fit around the
waist (usually size 18-24 mos! for a 3 year old!), they're just comically
short.

Fortunately, summer is coming, and his shorts will just be a bit shorter
than fashionable. But I'd still like recommendations for toddler clothing
brands that seem to come a bit trimmer-fitting. Anyone?

All of my kids are very skinny. My 5 year old is still under 40 pounds.
What's working for us right now, for all 3 girls, are overalls and jeans
with adjustable elastic inside the waist. Arizona (at JC Penney), Old Navy,
and The Gap all have those jeans. I've also had good luck with Wranglers
because they're cut slim to begin with. My daughter wore a lot of Land's
End pants with plain elastic waistbands until she decided she wanted to wear
only jeans and skirts.

Denise

Ds is thin, but average percentiles so it's not just the skinny kids, it's
the kids with a flat butt too!

Once they lose the diaper it gets worse, but it's a catch 22 because if you
put a belt on them it makes potty training quite difficult.

I've found Old Navy to run pretty trim compared to others. Their regular old
jeans have fit ds very well. Other than elasticized sweatpants, I haven't
had too much luck. Ds has been potty trained for over a year now, so we've
figured out his belt so that it's tight enough to keep his pants up, but not
so tight that he can't just pull them down to go to the bathroom.

As for shorts, I really didn't have too much trouble because all of his
shorts were elasticized. I also find he can wear shorts about twice as long
as pants since you have more flexibility with the length. Good luck! I feel
your pain! lol.

DS is rather skinny and I've found clothing from Children's Place to fit him
well. Carter's makes an adjustable waist pant that has elastic on the
inside that you let in and out to fit. I bought a couple of pairs and they
are terrific. Unfortunately, I've never found them again, so I don't know
if they still make them. If anyone knows where to find them, please let me
know!

Yep, my son is really skinny too. The adjustable waist pants from Gap are a
no-go, I can't tighten them enough! Levis are the only jeans I can find that
work after trying jeans from Gap, Old Navy, Gymboree, Arizona's, and Walmart
brands (rustler and wrangler) None would work and I wound up with a closet
full of jeans with tags still on them.

Also the elastic waisted pants/jeans from Lands End or LLbean work well and
that is what Im stocking up on for school wear.

He mostly lives in jogging/sweat pants though.

Good luck!

Have you tried overalls? Usually they have the adjustable shoulder straps
which might provide enough extra length for your DS.

Good, then. I'll try the Levis. I hadn't had luck with Gap or Old Navy,
either, and I didn't want to waste any more money if I could avoid it. I'll
look into Lands End too. Thanks!

I know! I'm worried about what to do when the diaper is gone. The poor kid
won't have anything at all to keep his pants up. I'm starting to think about
suspenders . . . They might be easier for potty training than a belt . . .

I've been buying those Gap jeans in slim sizes with the
adjustable waist for my twig (10 yo who weighs about 60
pounds.) Last time we were in, there seemed to be fewer
slims - when I asked the SA, she said they were phasing out
slims b/c they didn't seem to feel the need for them with
the adjustable waists. As I told her, slims are *too big*
for my child and we need the elastic to make them small
enough. Grrrrr. . .

We'v had good luck with finding 'slim' toddler clothes at Land's End
(and it often seems like when they make slims, they end up with too
many, so they put them in the overstocks sections, on sale), Levi's
sometimes, and 'Arizona', which I think is JCPenneys.

Tina.
